Pride Centre vandalized, anti-gay hate on the rise?

Apr 20, 2010 22:11

The Pride Centre of Edmonton was broken into and vandalized over the weekend. They stole a computer with sensitive information, smashed a window, took cleaning supplies and generally made a big, soapey, glassey mess.

Since there was no graffiti or the like, we don’t know if it was hate-motivated or not. It may just have been some vandals looking for ‘fun’. It’s frustrating, because the difference between a hate crime and general nuance-makers is a big one. I’m worried about a rise in homophobic attacks. On Friday my mom was at the downtown Elephant and Castle when a man, entirely unprovoked, approached the table of two men on a date. He punched one, called him something gay, and ran. He was not caught.

I have heard whispers of other attacks. Is this a trend anyone else is seeing? We have to be vigilant here in reporting so the police can do their jobs and protect us. If you have any more stories, please share them, with me and the authorities.
