cyxymu

If you haven’t heard what really took down Twitter and affected Facebook, LJ and YouTube, here’s the story: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/08/technology/internet/08twitter.html?hpw

Some people think the attacks might have actually been organized by the Russian government itself. Either way, it is certainly worrisome that as communication seems to move past reliable things like phone networks, we’re seeing that these companies are not necessarily prepared to deal with it.

Apparently LJ removed Cyxymu again, which could be because they had to so that the service would work again. But what was that about LJ bought by Russians, again?

This is a really interesting story about both Cyxymu before these recent attacks and a lot about the larger picture of speech in the online world: http://neteffect.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2009/08/07/is_cyxymu_the_first_digital_refugee

"in the absence of strong and public commitments to defending freedom of expression, most Web2.0 companies would inevitably lean towards organizational efficiency and cost-optimization - i.e. deleting problematic users"
