Dee blinked, confused, wondering for a moment if he’d somehow stepped into an alternate reality. This looked like the squad room at the two-seven, and the people seated at the various desks certainly resembled the guys he worked with practically every day, most of them his friends as well as his colleagues, and yet…
Instead of jumping to his feet and throwing himself at Dee in enthusiastic and totally unwelcome greeting, JJ hadn’t moved from his chair. He’d spared the object of his long-time crush a brief glance when Dee had entered before turning back to his paperwork.
If he hadn’t been so sure that any sign of him caring would have been totally misconstrued by the smaller man, Dee might have asked JJ if he was okay, but the last thing he wanted was to trigger the other detective’s usual response to his arrival. Instead, he cautiously sidled into the room, giving JJ a wide berth, crossed to his desk, and slid into the chair, frowning.
Ryo looked up at him with a smile. “Morning, Dee.”
“Yeah,” Dee said distractedly. “Is it just me, or is JJ actin’ a bit… odd this mornin’? Feels like I stepped into the mirror universe.” At Ryo’s blank look, he added, “You know, like on Star Trek, an alternate universe where everything’s just different enough that you know you’re not in your own world anymore. You really need to watch more sci-fi.”
“What does sci-fi have to do with JJ?”
Dee glanced across the squad room. “He’s just not actin’ like himself, which is good ‘cause I never wanted him throwin’ himself at me in the first place, but it’s unsettlin’. Damn, I hope he hasn’t been replaced by a pod person.”
“Maybe he’s finally given up chasing you.”
“I can only hope.”
