It’s so dark outside the tent, the very depths of the night, and it’s eerily quiet, not even so much as a breeze rustling the leaves overhead. The campfire has long since died to embers, a faint red glow in the carefully constructed firepit several yards from the tent, and the moon has either already set or hasn’t risen yet. Dee isn’t sure which; he hadn’t exactly been paying attention to the sky earlier, his gaze fixed on Ryo, his skin and hair gilded by the firelight, making him seem to glow with an inner light, breathtakingly gorgeous.

Now Ryo is sound asleep in his sleeping bag, and Dee ought to be, but instead he’s wide awake, staring out into the darkness, and it’s ridiculous, because this is hardly the first camping trip he’s taken with his lover, and yet…

Maybe it’s because it’s so quiet, or because it’s so dark, or because… well, he doesn’t know why; he simply can’t sleep, and after lying beside his partner for more than an hour trying to doze off, he’d given it up as a waste of time and effort. That’s why he’s sitting here with the tent flap open, staring out into the night, even though he can’t see much.

There’s a scattering of stars overhead, dimly visible through the trees, peeping through occasional gaps in the clouds, but they don’t give enough light to do more than make silhouettes of the branches. Staring past the dim glow of what’s left of their fire towards where he knows there are bushes between the trees, Dee keeps expecting to see the glow of animal eyes staring back at him, like there might be something there, a wolf, or a bear, maybe a cougar. Ryo’s already told him there’s nothing like that around here, but Dee’s not convinced. They’re in the middle of nowhere; how can his lover be so sure?

An owl hoots, breaking the silence, and Dee almost flinches, then feels foolish. If Ryo knew he’s laugh, not unkindly, and tease Dee about being a city boy, which is totally true, and not something Dee’s ashamed off. It’s a familiar joke between them, but right now Dee wishes he could be more comfortable in the wilderness. Maybe someday he will be, just not tonight.

Securing the tent flaps, he lays down again, willing sleep to come, wishing it was morning already.

The End
