Being the Slayer had already done irreparable damage to Buffy’s social life. Not just the move from L.A. to Sunnydale, although that had been bad enough, but the way her extracurricular activities so often interfered with having anything resembling a life outside of school and Slaying.

But now, thanks to an unexpected miracle, she had a date, with an actual boy, and not just any boy, but Owen Thurman! Maybe her luck was changing, maybe fate was going to be kind to her for once and she’d get to feel like a regular girl…

Or not.

Giles and his prophecies; every time Buffy saw a glimmer of normality on the horizon, something would happen to crush it out of existence, and it was usually something bad. So here she was, sitting in a cemetery, waiting for something to happen, when she could have been at The Bronze, with Owen, on a date. Worse, when she did finally get to the club, Owen was
dancing with Cordelia. What else could Buffy do but leave? Looked like she’d lost her chance, and it sucked like the suckiest thing ever.

But against all odds, when she ran into Owen at school the next day, he wanted to see her again, or for the first time. So they rescheduled their inaugural date, and once again, Buffy got ready…

And once again, Giles showed up prophesying doom and gloom, but this time Buffy wasn’t going to let him wreck her life. He might be her Watcher, but he wasn’t her keeper, and she was going on her date with Owen whether Giles approved or not. He could page her if he needed her.

This time, the date was interrupted by Angel, of all people. Then Willow and Xander showed up, and everything went to Hell, with a side trip to the Sunnydale Funeral Home. After that, it was business as usual, battling vampires, saving the world, rescuing Giles… And almost getting her potential boyfriend killed. The first boy who’d been interested in her in forever! Why did the universe hate her so much?

The worst part was, even after all that, and the freaking out, which was totally understandable, Owen was still interested in dating Buffy, just not for the right reasons. Turning him down was one of the hardest things she’d ever had to do.

Maybe Giles was right; dating wasn’t worth the hassle.

The End
