A/N: Triple drabble.
Sprawled on the sofa, Ryo watched the lights twinkling on the Christmas tree and sighed. Not so long ago, the festive season would’ve made him feel gloomy and depressed, the gaiety overshadowed by the loss of his parents. It had taken him years to be able to face Christmas with optimism and genuine enthusiasm, but now it was almost over for another year, and he realised he was going to miss it.
“You okay?” Joining Ryo, Dee pushed his lover’s bare feet aside to make room for himself on the sofa and sat, passing across a steaming mug.
“Fine. Thanks for this.” Ryo smiled and sipped at his tea, but there was still a wistful look in his eyes.
“You don’t look fine. Tired of bein’ merry and bright?”
Ryo chuckled. “No, just the opposite. I hate that we have to take the decorations down tomorrow, even though the tree’s starting to shed.” Despite their efforts to keep it alive, there were already fallen pine needles scattered beneath it on the floor, and several branches were looking decidedly bare. “Feels like we’ll be taking all the colour and light out of our world.”
“Yeah, gets a bit depressin’ after New Year, with nothin’ to add a bit of sparkle to the cold, grey winter weather.” Dee sipped from his own mug, looking thoughtful. “Tree’s gotta go, no way around that if we don’t wanna end up with the damned needles in bed with us, but we could put the lights up somewhere else, maybe around the windows, or over the TV, take ‘em down in spring when everywhere’s lookin’ more cheery. It’s nor like they use much electricity.”
Ryo brightened. “That would be great! You’re sure you wouldn’t mind?”
“Why would I? Anything makes you happy makes me happy too.”
