Ryo threw himself down behind a clump of bushes; they didn’t provide anywhere near as much cover as he would have liked, but when you’re being shot at, you take what you can find and make the best of it. Besides, even though the bushes weren’t ideal, they’d block him from view long enough to reach a better defensive position. If the shooter can’t see you, there’s less chance of getting hit; that was one of the first things he’d learned at the police academy.

From the bushes, he was able to worm his way across the dead leaves, twigs, and occasional patches of grass to a rocky outcropping. First he made it appear that he was headed in the other direction, where a fallen tree and some thicker undergrowth concealed the crumbling remains of a stone wall he’d noticed earlier, then he moved much more quietly towards the rocks. As he’d hoped, it worked, and the next burst of gunfire was directed several yards to the right of where he actually was. So far, so good.

Once he reached the outcrop he stood up, taking a moment to dust himself off and check his weapon. Then he turned his attention to the rockface before him, looking for the best way up. He’d done some rock-climbing the previous summer, and what he’d learned then proved useful now. He didn’t have any climbing equipment with him, but he didn’t need it. The outcrop was only about fifteen feet tall, and there were plenty of foot and handholds, but it would provide a good vantage point. Once he got up there, he could bring his sniper training into play.

The climb only took a few minutes, and there was a flat, sloping slab near the top wide enough to accommodate him. He lay there, breathing slowly, calming himself, before inching towards the edge, where there was a notch he should be able to see through without making himself too visible.

The gunfire had stopped; maybe the shooter was reloading, or changing position himself. Ryo scanned the area, alert for any sign of movement. For long minutes there was nothing, but then…

A crouching figure darted from behind a tree, ducking behind a rock. Smiling, Ryo took careful aim, and when the figure moved out of concealment, he fired. Direct hit!

“Ow! Dammit!” Dee yelled. “I’m never playin’ laser tag with ya again!”

The End
