She’s taken on so many names in the past few years that sometimes she barely remembers the one she was born with. It’s been so long since anyone used it that it no longer matters, because she’s not that girl anymore. She hasn’t been for what feels like most of her life, but really isn’t.
If she’s honest, she doesn’t really know who she is. Perhaps she never did, or perhaps she really isn’t anybody, nobody who matters at least. She was Chantarelle for a while, until she saw what a mistake that had been, and she’s been Lily for a few months… For a while, that one had seemed to work, because she’d had Ricky, and he’d seen her, really seen her, looked right at her instead of through her, and made her feel real. He’d cared about her, looked after her, and even though they’d had almost nothing she’d dared to think that as long as they had each other then maybe they had a future. Maybe she’d found herself in him.
But then Ricky had vanished, and she’d asked Buffy to look for him, only it was too late…
Without Ricky, Lily is nothing, just another anonymous lost soul wandering the streets, unnoticed, uncared for, unwanted. She half wishes she could fade into the background, just disappear the way Ricky had, and she almost does, drawn into an underworld, or another dimension. But Buffy finds her because Buffy is everything Lily has never been. Strong, brave, smart, and sure of herself. Lily envies her but knows she can’t ever be like her. Lily’s too afraid.
She can’t be Buffy, but perhaps Lily can learn to be someone else. Buffy’s given her that, along with a one-room apartment and a paying job.
Lily was yesterday; today she’s Anne.
