“He could charm the birds out of the trees, that one,” Rhiannon said to Ianto, watching Jack play with her kids. Even David was laughing instead of being his usual surly, not-quite-teenaged self.
“You have no idea,” Ianto replied.
Just the day before, Jack had so thoroughly charmed a visiting alien warrior queen that she’d completely abandoned all thoughts of conquest and committed herself and her clan to defending earth, in exchange for certain trade goods she coveted. Apparently, tube socks were the next big thing in certain sectors of the galaxy. There was no accounting for alien tastes.
Although there were some, such as DI Swanson, who were naturally immune, Jack effortlessly charmed people wherever he went. A flash of those bright, white teeth in one of his dazzling smiles, a bit of sweet-talking, and a whiff of his irresistible fifty-first century pheromones, and most folks would believe anything he told them. That was handy for Torchwood since it meant using less retcon and lower doses.
Ianto had no intention of trying to change Jack; he loved him the way he was.
“He’d just better not hurt you,” Rhiannon warned. “If he does, even his charm won’t save him.”
