“I think my career just peaked,” Dee said with a sigh. “Gonna be all downhill from here.”
“What’re you talking about?” As much as Ryo loved Dee, there were times he just didn’t understand his partner. “Only last month we were celebrating your promotion.”
Dee had been stunned but delighted when the Chief had said he was recommending him for promotion to Detective Second Grade. He hadn’t honestly ever expected it, mostly because of his habit of bending the rules almost to breaking point.
“I know. When I made detective in the first place, I never expected to get any higher, but I think this is as high up the ladder as I ever wanna go.” He looked at his desk with a resigned expression on his face. “Seems the higher a guy gets, the more paperwork there is. I go any higher, I’m gonna drown in it.”
“Any further promotion would be years away, so I don’t know what you’re worried about.”
“Who said I was worried?” Dee frowned across at his partner.
“You just said your career’s peaked.”
“Oh, that.” Dee waved a dismissive hand. “Not what I was talkin’ about.”
“It wasn’t?” Now Ryo was even more confused.
“Nope!” Dee grinned, and he certainly didn’t LOOK worried; he was smug more than anything else.
“Care to enlighten me then?”
“Remember the Gonzalez case?”
“How could I ever forget?” It was a high-profile homicide that remained unsolved after almost three years. How it had ended up being their responsibility was anyone’s guess; maybe everyone else in the precinct had already taken a crack at it and failed to turn up anything new.
“I think I just solved it.”
“What?” Ryo sat up straight.
“Not entirely certain yet, but if I’m right… Could be the highlight of my career!”
