How to shoot one's self in the foot

So there's a small set of players at a particular place. They might be considered a 'clique' in the barest of senses. Some of them are indeed exclusionist in their RP (or very very picky at the very least), and some do not RP at all, they just sit around and chat.

One would think this group is quite influential, and one would be right. However this group has shot itself in the foot in more than one instance.

For example, there will always be a few players this crowd doesn't like, either for their personality or for the way the people RP. They don't even necessarily have to be BAD RPers, but the hangups of this crowd dictate they must reflexively knee-jerk against anything that doesn't exactly follow their idea of how things should be. So what do they do about this? They whine and complain and bitch and moan ENDLESSLY about these players to their friends and to anyone who will listen. Now, I know what they're doing. They're trying to get people on 'their side' and trying to amass people who agree with them in order to effect change. However, this sometimes has the opposite effect. They complained about two particular players so much to a person they were trying desperately to get to join the game, that the person said, "no thanks." You see, they made such a BIG deal about it (and about how the mods wouldn't do 'anything' about these other players), that the person they were trying to coerce into joining thought that they'd only expose themselves to unpleasantry by joining.

That was not the first instance of them shooting themselves in the foot. Several players have quit because two or three of this crowd whined to them endlessly about other players.

TL;DR, sometimes bitching about other players doesn't have the intended effect.
