"No mother, I haven't shown my face to anyone," Penelope replied, keeping her voice quiet as she spoke to her mother.

"I just worry dear. I need to know I made the right decision in sending you there."

"I'm fine. I like it here very much mother, and guess what? I have a job now."

"What? Oh, Penelope, sweetheart, you didn't," her mother whined.

"I did. ( Read more... )

Hurley knocked on Penelope's door with a quick one-two.

Oh! "Just a minute, please!"

Setting her mirror aside, she settled her scarf back in place and stepped over to the door, opening it with a ready smile. "Good evening, Hurley."

"Oh hey, cool, didn't know if you'd, like, be around," Hurley said. "Uhhh, hi."

"I have nowhere else to be this evening. Would you like to come in?" she asked.

"Oh, sure," Hurley said. "I was just gonna see what you were up to. I'm guessing, like, not much."

She chuckled lightly and stepped aside so he could enter. "If you consider talking to my mother up to something, then I was up to that, but it wasn't a long conversation. How are you tonight? And please, you may sit anywhere you like, except that bed there, that's Claire's."

Hurley looked around for a chair. "Good call? I really should call my mom. Though I'm not sure what all to tell her. If... anything."

Penelope indicated her desk chair with a wave of her hand, if he like. "It was decent, yes, although I did tell a tiny lie but feel it was justified. She'd freak out if I told the truth and I couldn't have that. I am enjoying myself here too much to be made to come home so soon." She sat down primly on the edge of her bed, crossing her legs.

Hurley sat on the desk chair and nodded. "Yeah, I'm gonna probably have to do more than a little lying to my mom. Especially about my roommate."

"If you just don't mention it, perhaps your mother won't bring it up," she suggested helpfully. "Would you like a Ho-Ho?"

"Oh, yeah, please," Hurley said. "Like I'm gonna turn down a ho-ho?"

She smiled brightly and stood, moving to a particular chest at the foot of her bed. Opening it, she brought out a box of Ho-Ho's and pulled out one package containing two cakes. Then the box went back in, the trunk lid closed, and Penelope stepped back to Hurley, handing the cream filled cakes to him. "They're my favorite."

"You got good taste," Hurley said, opening the package. "You want one of these?"

"Oh, no thank you. I had one after dinner," she replied. Besides, she wouldn't eat in front of him.

"Do you have a green thumb, Hurley?" Penelope had at least four terrarium's sitting around on her side of the room, each with a particular flowery plant inside with various small trinkets, illuminated by a gentle light.

Hurley was not one to be shamed by eating in front of others. He practically inhaled the first ho-ho.

"I haven't done much garden work. We didn't really have a good yard for that sort of thing."

"I've never worked in a garden before but I bet it is simply lovely," she replied with a fond glance at her plants.

"I have a liter of Coke; would you care for a glass? I know it is very hard to eat those without having something to drink."
