Yesterday was my first day as an unemployed student and my alarm clock was set for 5:15 a.m. Bleh.
Kim and I were on the road at 6 a.m. to head to the city and spend the day on a university campus. Once we arrived on campus, she disappeared into the crowd of hundereds of other visiting high school students and I obediently atttended the parents' information sessions. We had university parents, students, alumni, and admin staff ejukate us on tuition, residence, admissions, pre-reqs, scholarships, social clubs, etc. I took notes on the back of my registration paperwork and will try to make sense of it all today.
I sat at a table with a mom from Swift Current; she's a grad 11 and 12 high school teacher and her oldest son is thinking about attending this university next year. We talked about the city of Swift Current, which schools she liked, what area of the city she lived in, and what she liked about the city - I'd still like to end up there when I'm finally registered, but it's impossible to know which midwifery positions will be open when I'm done. I haven't ruled out Alberta either.
While I was on campus yesterday I visited the campus bookstore. I fondled medical textbooks, browsed native studies books about health and parenting, and debated about buying this book, "
Impact of Birthing Practices on Breastfeeding." There were plenty of Ob/Gyn books but nothing I couldn't live without.
Kim went on several groups tours, attending a mock lecture for English, checked out Geology and finally, Vet-Med!! Kim has to have high school physics as a pre-req for Vet Medicine and she's really struggling this year. When she was on the tour for vet med, Kims said she was told she would need 6 university credits of physics, "..and that's where I died a little bit inside." Kim told me. LOL! Vet Med requires a minimum of two years of credits in Arts & Science, so she's looking at 6-7 years of school. I hope that no matter what she does for post-secondary education, she finds something that she loves to do and figures out a way to get paid doing it ;-)
On the long drive home, we talked about her experience on campus. It's kind of freaky for me, to imagine my bebe living away from home, but it's part of growing up, I know. With one about to leave the nest, it makes me hold Charlotte even closer, and enjoy the fact that I have two little girls who have many years at home still. I can't believe that our first-born is about to graduate from high school already!
And now, it's time to get some cereal for the Littles, make Julia's lunch, and get ready for another busy day. Hopefully this afternoon and tonight I will get some school work done!
