I'd heard rumours about this, but came across the link today. This news was released in January of this year.
WINNIPEG - The province is spending more than $3.5 million to develop a birth centre in St. Vital.
The facility, which will feature four birthing rooms and an array of maternal health care services, is to open in mid-2011.
The free-standing centre will complement hospital-based birthing services at St. Boniface General Hospital and the Women's Hospital.
It is expected the centre will handle up to 500 births a year.
The new centre, long a goal of women's groups, will offer primary prenatal, postpartum and newborn care, parenting support and education and breastfeeding support and education.
Health Minister Theresa Oswald made the announcement today along with several other female members of the NDP caucus and representatives from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the Women's Health Clinic.
The facility will be located in the old Global TV building on St. Mary's Road near St. Anne's Road. (which is 603 St. Mary's Road Winnipeg. You can see a picture of the building on google maps)
This is a link to their birth center proposal, submitted in 2007.
I wonder if I'll get the chance to do some clinical here next year, through Pathways/UCN......
