Legal midwifery in Saskatchewan

Mar 10, 2008 22:50

While I was on my way to attend a homebirth in Saskatoon, the Saskatchewan Government was making this announcement.

Basically, it finalizes the Midwifery Act, so midwives will now be able to provide legal, funded midwifery care in homes and hospitals.  Until now, midwives could only deliver babies at home, clients paid for services on their own dime, and midwifery was in an illegal and alegal situation.

This is a good thing, but there will be some bumps along the way as midwives and midwifery services are incorporated into the current health care system.  Hopefully by the time I am ready to practice, most of the bumps will be smoothed out ;-)
