Jack, Julia and I went to see my Ob/Gyn early this afternoon to have an ultrasound done. As Dr. U came in the room he asked me again what our plans were for this birth. I told him we were still undecided but that I was seeing a doctor in Saskatoon who would support us no matter where we chose to birth. He was very pleased to hear I was seeing someone in the city. After we gave him a blank video cassette he started the ultrasound, carefully checking the baby's anatomy. Everything looks great! Ten fingers and ten toes, two kidneys, a full bladder, four chambers in the heart, he showed the blood flow in the umbilical cord and pointed out the different parts of baby's brain. We saw baby's eyes and lips, the hands were closed tightly so we could see the bent fingers and knuckles, and we had a perfect profile of the little foot! Actually, it didn't look so little! Baby is breech and was facing away from us so it was difficult to see everything the doctor wanted to see. He said to me, "My disclaimer is this..." as he pinched the fat on my hip, pointing out that the excess fat makes the resolution not so good. Whatever.
.....but baby's legs were tightly closed and squeezed together, exactly how both Julia and Abby were at this stage. He tried several times to see but said he would only be guessing at this point, and since neither of us saw anything resembling a penis I assume his guess would be a girl. Until we know for sure, I will continue to assume that this baby is a girl ;-) He asked me to come back in a month to get a better look at the heart and blood flow and I am okay with that. He was very thorough with this part of the ultrasound with Abby too and I don't mind going back for another one.
