Can you sing with all the voices in the mountain?

I have a big case of White Girl Guilt right now.

My current training assignment is Pocahontas, and I just finished captioning "Colors of the Wind." If you've forgotten the crappy lyrics (for which Stephen Schwartz should not have won an Oscar), check out these two verses:

"You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

"You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew"

After I stopped laughing and focused on the pretty pictures, I felt like replenishing the earth. Maybe buy farmland and grow crops for the less-fortunate. Or join Greenpeace and sit on oil barrels in the ocean, or drag my empty soda cans home instead of throwing them away at work. Anything to make life better for those cute little animated bear cubs!

And then, I remembered that this movie sucks. Obviously, my blood sugar was low this morning :)

In totally unrelated news, Sheryl Swoopes has officially come out.

(For non-sports fans, Swoopes is one of the top, most-respected, female basketball players of all time. Also, a geniunely nice person. She's sometimes referred to as Lady Air, a la Michael "Air" Jordan.)

I bow to her display of courage. It's daunting enough for any pro athlete to come out publically. Add to that her gender, race and former life as a married mother. According to the piece (in the newest EPSN The Magazine), she's tired of pretending to be someone she's not.
