another kind of styleguide: the Grunge Guide

Nov 25, 2005 00:23

hey there :) I'm busy as hell and still a little anti-social... but I managed to write down the first part of the Grunge Guide.
I splitted the whole thing into several parts. I suggest that you complete each part on its own before moving onto the next part as I will use the things we've already created in the upcoming parts :)
This first part covers grunge textures from scratch. As one of my last polls revealed that most of you are at least intermediate or advanced I don't explain any detail to excess. If I'm too vague or confusing please let me know and I'll edit it.

The Grunge Guide - Part I - Textures from Scratch

General Notes:
used program: Photoshop 7.0
includes: the downloadable (a bit downsized) PSD-document
slightly picture intense
you can click the previews to get the large pics (opens in a new window)
[the layer names in the brackets indicate the layer names in the psd-file, just for reference]

step 01

make a new document, use a wallpaper size (or something similar that size). I tend to use a larger size than I need in the end, because sizing down smoothens the grunge a bit and I like that effect.
I'm working on a 1024x768 canvas in this case.
Fill it with a earthy color. I used #D8D0BD. [background]

step 02

we're getting some texuturing onto our pic.
Use Filter - Noise - Add Noise - 4% Gaussian Monochromatic to add some (guess what??) noise.

Choose the Single Row Marquee Tool (it's an option under the standard Rectangular Marquee Tool) and mark a line on your canvas.
with the selection still active press ctrl+t to switch into the transformation mode and stretch everything to top and bottom until you only have tiny vertical lines.

Use Filter - Distort - Ocean Ripple (Ripple size: 9/Ripple Magnitude: 20)

step 03

we're doing some more texturing and stuff...
On a new layer, colors #D8D0BD (our starting color) and #FFFFFF (white),
use Filter - Render - Clouds, set the Blending Mode: Color Burn. [Layer 1]

On a new layer, still same colors, merge-copy and paste the whole pic (or just use ctrl+shift+alt+e), use Filter - Sketch - Torn Edges (Image Balance: 40/Smoothness: 11/Contrast: 13), [Layer 2]

set the Blending Mode: Color Burn

On a new layer, reset colors to b/w, use Filter - Render - Clouds, then Levels (ctrl+l) with these input levels: 100/1/200,
use Filter - Stylize - Find Edges,
use Filter - Noise - Add Noise (4% Gaussian Monochromatic),
then Levels (ctrl+l) with these input levels: 190/1/230, [Layer 3]

set the Blending Mode: Softlight at 30% opacity

on a new layer: fill it with black, paint with a big hard round brush tip some large white areas, [Layer 4]

use Filter- Distort - Wave with standard settings , but Triangle instead of Sine, hit randomize until you like the result

reset colors to b/w, use Filter - Distort - Glass (Distortion: 5/Smoothness: 2/Texture: Frosted),

select the black area with the magic wand tool and 0 tolerance, delete it

set the remaining part on Blending Mode: Color Burn at 60% opacity, colorize the layer with ctrl+u 0/25/40, if you prefer you can desaturate it, but I suggest that you make it lighter at least.

step 04

the shading
two new layers, both on Softlight, 50% opacity, with a huge soft round brush paint some soft spots, on one layer black/ on the other one white. [Layer 5, Layer 5 copy]

step 05

cracks
two new layers, both on Softlight, 50% opacity, with a very small (1-3 point) hard round brush tip scrawl some random lines/scrabbles, on one layer black/ on the other one white,
(this technique was inspired by the awesome inxsomniax aka Thia my dear friend, but I tweaked it to my suitings.)
use Filter - Distort - ZigZag (Amount: 45/Ridges: 5/Style: Pond ripples) on both layers and fade it to 50% opacity right after (shift+f). [Layer 6, Layer 6 copy]

step 06

final touches
on a new layer, merge-copy-paste the whole pic (shift+ctrl+alt+e), and with the burn tool paint in shadows and midtones near the edges of your canvas to make it darker with a fairly big (100pt) soft round brush tip. [Layer 7]

on a new layer, merge copy paste the whole pic, set it on Blending Mode: Multiply and lower the opacity to your liking. [Layer 8]

coming up next: making your own grunge brush set

in the end we will pretty much end with something
like this
or that

feedback is very appreciated :) have fun!
