Seth stood at the bottom of the stairs in Carlisle and Esme’s house, a torn look on his face. He could hear Luka crying, screaming for his Daddy and Papa. His heart broke a little with each cry; his resolve had nearly broken when a hand rested itself on his shoulder. Seth turned his head and met Edward’s warm gaze. The hand on his shoulder squeezed a little.
“I know it’s hard but it’s something they all have to go through,” Edward told him. Seth sighed and nodded, he let Edward lead him away from the stairs. He tried to put on a happy face, all the while thinking about how much easier it would be if Jasper were here instead of on a hunt with Emmett. Lilliana latched onto his arm and started telling him some story that involved her imprint and something he had tried to do to impress her. Seth smiled at her indulgently, one ear open to her story and the other listening to the cries of his baby upstairs.
An hour later, Seth found himself standing outside the door that separated him from Luka. His baby had stopped crying for a little bit, probably when he couldn’t breathe anymore, and had fallen into hiccups but then started again.
“Dada! Dada! Papa! Papa! Be good! Ka be good! Ka be good!”
Seth closed his eyes and backed away until his back hit the wall behind himself. He slid down and brought his knees up to his chest, wrapping his arms around them. “Please stop Luka, this is for the best…you have to learn that you can’t cry for everything,” Seth whispered, repeating the words Leah and others had told him when they thought he and Jasper were picking Luka up too much.
Soft footsteps came up the stairs and a cool, soothing presence settling beside him. Seth looked over at Esme, his gaze pained. “Please don’t…”
“How do you feel Seth?” Esme asked.
“Like my heart is breaking. I know I can’t pick him up every time he cries but this is killing me Esme… he’s crying now because he thinks he did something bad and he didn’t. Luka shouldn’t be punished for something he didn’t do!”
“Then why are you sitting out here?”
“What? Because everyone says…”
“Everyone may say but that is your baby Seth, you decide what is best for him, not everyone else.” She nudged his shoulder with a motherly smile. “Go hug your baby, assure him that he’s not alone for being a bad boy.”
Seth smiled and threw his arms around her in a hug. “Thank you Esme,” he breathed before getting to his feet and rushing into the room across from them.
Esme smiled as she watched through the doorway as Luka’s tear stained face lit up. “Dada! Ka good!”
“I know Luka, I know, you’re a very good boy, Dada loves you.” Seth reached out and picked his baby up, holding him close, stroking his hair. “You’re a very good boy,” he whispered.
