I'm back! Here we go!
Her smile is sweet as she holds up her fingers in the early light, which is clear this far above the clouds; the diamonds sparkle nearly as much as she does. "I thought it was time." Her voice is sweet, too, but there's a steel behind it, and she's wrong, it is not time.
Further proof that for all her 'love' for Lucas, (her tasty, freesia-lavender-cookie dough scented Lucas) there is something far more unpleasant and manipulative beneath Mary's proper Victorian Lady exterior. While Edward and Jacob had their moments, it's both refreshing and terrifying to have the female love interests being outright antagonistic with each other. It speaks of our culture, I think, that 'fighting for your Man' means being hateful and malicious in order to get your way. To be perfectly fair, though, this is more as it's portrayed in media than in RL (though I have seen a few interesting spats in my day).

While Edward and Jacob had their moments, it's both refreshing and terrifying to have the female love interests being outright antagonistic with each other. This really is almost exact book canon (this scene pulled more from book than movie), except that obviously Mary is in control of the ring. (Insert requisite LotR joke here.) IIRC canon is actually a bit worse, in that Edward really draws it out with relish. Yet it seems a lot worse coming from a girl, and I honestly don't know why that is. It *shouldn't*, but it does.
It speaks of our culture, I think, that 'fighting for your Man' means being hateful and malicious in order to get your way.I almost feel as though this one -- the cultural messaging -- is a throwback to pre-women's lib. I mean, we need to face it: the subconscious learned behavior just doesn't change as fast as we think it does. Last century was amazing, but a lot of aspects of forward thinking are still generational. Women *couldn't* be open about this sort of thing; passive-aggressive backstabbing was the only

My Body Is A Cage part two...ext_986104February 14 2012, 00:53:42 UTC
The Pack had made it very clear -- in about as many ways as possible that didn't involve hieroglyphics or billboards -- that they could care less whether Lucas lived or died. The only reason they were helping with his protection was because they weren't interested in letting a vampire army run around eating people and otherwise causing havoc near their territory. We're going to kill the leeches, Sam had said at the How To Destroy Newborns training session, then you're all on your own. Then he'd glared at Lucas so hard that Lucas had literally taken a step backwards. And I do mean all of you.
The way the Pack is circling around Ruth makes sense... but is quite disconcerting. At this point in the story, it's shifting from them being protective of their youngest female to being intimidating for the sake of being intimidating. They know they are huge and outweigh Lucas by a minimum of 50 lbs, and to be perfectly fair Lucas' only crime up to this point is dating a Vampire (which I can see as being a Really Bad Thing in their eyes) and "

They know they are huge and outweigh Lucas by a minimum of 50 lbs, and to be perfectly fair Lucas' only crime up to this point is dating a Vampire (which I can see as being a Really Bad Thing in their eyes) and "leading on" Ruth. It's about as bad as that. Essentially, Lucas has, from their perspective, completely changed Ruth from a happy-go-lucky girl to someone who can barely hold her shit together... and they didn't really like him from the beginning. (The leechlover thing.) They wouldn't do that for Leah, but Leah is a) older, b) has the weird relationship with Sam, c) wouldn't be involved with someone who fucked around with vampires, and d) kind of awful to all of them. Essentially, they *like* Ruth. But I also always found it profoundly unrealistic that the Pack never gave Bella the cold shoulder; that was definitely a Mary Sue Meyer wank. No would could possibly hate Bella

There hadn't been any movement for a long moment, but then Ruth had wrapped her arms around him from behind like one of her old hugs. You're human. That's my point.
This right here is better than any other plea, or explanation, or argument Ruth has thrown at Lucas. While I don't think she knows about Lucas' sexual frustrations with Mary, I think this was a better way of offering herself to him than showing up in his bed naked like a furry Edward. Yes, the release was nice (if incredibly embarrassing), but simply holding him like she used to is probably the closest thing to the key to his heart.
When he woke up in the morning Ruth was gone from the tent and Mary sat in the corner, just looking at him. Before he'd even had a chance to say anything she'd whispered, It's okay. I know it was her fault. While I doubt Ruth planned it that way, I wonder what Mary thinks of her giving Lucas something she never could while he's human. And that she is displacing the blame to preserve her perfect image of Lucas is a little scary. I have no doubt

This right here is better than any other plea, or explanation, or argument Ruth has thrown at Lucas. / simply holding him like she used to is probably the closest thing to the key to his heart. Reading this brought me to the seriously depressing realization that -- I think -- girls are not taught that simply showing love to a guy is enough. "The way to a man's heart is through his ____" is what we're all taught. You can't just go *directly* for his heart; there has to be some trickery to it. I think that's why Ruth does the stuff she does. (Though the fact that she *did* just love him and that wasn't enough -- he went back to Mary anyway -- probably plays into it.) That is just... fuck, that's sad. And yet I really get the feeling that that's what girls are taught.

To hide his human scent Embry had carried Lucas up the mountain, slung over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, and somehow that Lucas was sure was completely by accident, Embry kept dropping him on rocks.
The. Mental. Image. Can Ruth just run off and be with Embry? Or anyone from the pack? Which runs me into the question: was Harry right, in When Harry Met Sally? Can men and women not be friends?
Okay, you kind of lost me on the tent grinding. I understand that the sexual tension and frustration between the two of them is going to eventually boil over, but this seemed to come entirely out of left field. Interesting. I admit, I've never been able to underestimate the ability of hormones to crack through exhausted and fucked-up minds. But then again, I found it completely outside the realm of possibility that Jacob wouldn't have used his strong bargaining position to kick Edward's ass out of the tent, and that something like this would have then happened in canon. Fuck, I nearly found it outside the realm of possibility that it would have happened even with Edward *in* the tent. I'm not sure I've ever heard of teenagers spooning without it becoming sexual.
I'm not particularly fond of Mary, like at all, but Lucas rubbing up on another

Can men and women not be friends?I know for a fact that it's possible to men and women to just be friends. My comment on shipping Ruth/Embry or Ruth/Pack is more of a reflection of how much I'm currently disliking Ruth/Lucas. At this point I don't think their relationship can be salvaged and would rather see Ruth cut ties and find someone else
