Class of 2007 Endows Resource Center in Oberlin Public Library
In an outstanding show of enthusiasm, the Class of 2007 raised funds to endow a resource
center in the
Oberlin public library that will be used by several College programs, including the SITES
program, which
engages Oberlin students in Spanish-language tutoring in the community, the upcoming
Graduate Teacher
Education Program, and other student mentoring programs. The 2007 class gift broke
records in both size and
number of participants, with more than half the class contributing to the $36,000 effort.
in comparison, the president of my class gave a rousing speech at my commencement about how things come to those who work hard, and we shouldn't give out handouts, and basically passed out this rather selfish maxim about not giving things to people (whether they need or deserve them)
i don't remember my class doing ANYTHING like this. i don't even think we gave away the usual scholarships to the following class year. i remember trying to have fund raisers and everyone being really apathetic.
it seems like something happened in my class generation. we were so special because we were the class of 2000. all these initiatives were made for us, and all these studies monitored us, and everyone tried to set us up. and it seems like as a result we, in general, as a solitary generation, have become horribly apathetic, selfish and in general...lazy.
not to say we don't care, because i have met SO many in my generation who care. but i don't know if we do anything.
i know i don't.
i suppose the solution to this is for me to get off my butt and start mobilizing, and start inspiring my contemporaries to do the same. i don't have to save the world. i can just build a learning annex. anything is better than nothing.
