I think it likely has to do with a rise in the popularity of nihilism in our generation. This may have a lot to do with films like "The Big Lebowski," "Fear and Loathing," and the like.
Maybe it has to do with the type of recruiting Oberlin is doing? I feel like our college experience was tainted because of 9/11. Also remember the job market was terrible around the time of graduation. All I could think about then was not having to move back in my parents, or being jobless or without a grad school when I graduate. The economy is a lot better now, and I think people have mobilized more in general in the last few years.
