Up .... and down

Nov 23, 2007 16:40

Today didn't start out so badly. I got up at 9am, rushed into the shower, and then out of the flat just before 10am. Made it to the station in plenty of time and took a train the single hop to Farnborough. Once there I wandered around a little, first paying in the latest Housing Benefit cheque and then attempting to find the closest stop of the No. 2 bus to the train station. That's the bus I'll need to take on Monday for my psychiatry appointment. I did find where it goes from the main car park of the Kingsmead shopping centre, which isn't too far away and I should be able to get to in time, but failed to find a closer stop that I was sure was the right No.2 and going the correct direction.

So, with that out of the way I walked up to Frimley Park Hospital, arriving shortly before mid-day. Now the bit of the appointment letter about this pre-operation test appointment said it was at 12:30, but to arrive 30 minutes prior to that in case they had to arrange any further tests. In my case I got called in even before mid-day, answered the necessary questions, had my pulse, blood oxygen and blood pressure checked, handed over my urine sample, and then was sent off to have blood drawn for some tests. It took me a few minutes to find the right place for that, mostly due to confusing directions (which were given in an attempt to get me there quicker!). Anyway, had the blood drawn (yay, once more no bruise), then decided I should make sure I knew where the ward was for Wednesday. Having checked the route to it again I then decided I was hungry so grabbed some lunch (which included the Walkers Marmite flavoured crisps I couldn't resist once I'd seen them) and then headed back home.

Thus, for an appointment stated to be at 12:30, but that I was told to turn up 30 minutes early to, and was cited as taking 1-4 hours... I was actually there for all of 15 minutes and home by 2pm.

Once at home I saw I'd been given the root password for the rebuilt fysh.org machine and thus started work on that. One of the first things I did was 'aptitude update' followed by 'aptitude dist-upgrade' to make sure UK2 had left it in fully updated state. It did pull in two things, the same samba update I applied to my home machines this morning, and a kernel image update. The latter was a little puzzling as during installation it kept on bitching that it was the same version as the already present image, and then gave dire warnings about rebooting ASAP so that modules would work properly.

Now, I didn't reboot straight away but I wasn't doing anything that would cause a module to load or unload, and what I did do was remove some unrelated software (web server, that samba install, printer server s/w etc), and compile up a new kernel from vanilla sources. Basically nothing I did removed or changed the configuration of anything that's involved in getting the machine booted up and answering ssh logins.

But when I did get around to a 'shutdown -r now' the machine didn't come back up :(. I waited 10 minutes, then used UK2's web interface to request a manual reboot, but still nothing half hour after that.

The only thing I can think of is that the kernel install bitching said to run some grub update command, and I didn't. But then it's the same damned image name as before and with an unchanged grub config it should have Just Worked[tm]. Not that I'm overly familiar with grub as LILO has continued to do everything I've needed of it and thus I never had incentive to learn a whole new config file syntax.

So, we're looking at more delay in getting bowl.fysh.org back up and running now, grrrr.
