The energy manipulation device was almost finished. It might be just weeks away, if he could only figure out the last few calibrations, and after several years of careful work that was so close he could taste it. But he wouldn't use it until he was sure; he wouldn't risk another Freeze Ray. Not on this scale. Mad scientist he may have been, but he was sane enough not to want to accidentally reduce Aternaville to a smoking hole in the ground.
No, if he did that, he wanted it to be deliberate.
Here at the source of so much of the strange energy was the best place to find the samples he needed. Soil and water and plant life saturated with the mysterious energy of the device that manipulated Death. Wearing one of Billy's faded black hoodies and a pair of jeans, he clambered down into the ravine as the evening darkened around him. Half an hour later, with his samples safely tucked away in his pockets, he clambered back up to the rim.
And realized he wasn't alone.
