So
monster_of_hope wrote me because she noticed that I had the line
Dean put his stuff down on the bed nearer the door, like always.
in Bad Company, and she'd written
Dean tossed a bag onto the queen bed closest to the door, putting himself between whatever was out there and Sam.
in her recent story (
Hopeful Monster, which I highly recommend), and was wondering if this was some bit of fanon that we'd both picked up somewhere.
As it happens, when I initially wrote the line, I sort of tossed it off without thinking because it just felt right gut-level, but then after I wrote it I stared at it for a while and thought about it, and I got pretty sure Dean *does* have the bed closer to the door almost all the time, and uh. Okay, look, I'm a fan, we're allowed to be obsessively nit-picky about these things!
This is iffy in many places because among other things, on several occasions they use both beds freely for dropping stuff on, sitting on, etc., so it's not at all a given that just because one of them has his stuff on a bed that that's his bed, and we don't see them actually sleeping that often. So I wouldn't call it canonical that Dean always takes the bed nearer to the outside, but it does seem marked enough a difference that I am now devoured with curiosity whether the writers are doing it on purpose. I don't think this is something that anyone can't write around anyway, since the characters aren't doing it overtly, but I think it is so cool if they really are.
Dean has the bed closer to the door:
- Dead In The Water, we don't see them sleeping, but Dean tosses some clothes onto the far bed near the door, and he's sitting on the far bed when Sam comes into the room.
- Phantom Traveler, he's asleep in the bed nearer the door when Sam comes in. (I nobly rewatched this scene to make absolutely sure.) Bonus: Dean takes the outside seat on the airplane.
- Home, Sam's lying on the bed further from the desk, and the door is right by the desk.
- Faith, first motel it's hard to tell, but there is another bed in the room closer to the door than the one Sam is spread out working on. Second motel, Dean throws his keys on the bed nearer the door and his jacket on the other bed; later on Sam is sitting on the farther bed and Dean is sitting on the nearer one, then Dean and Layla sit together on the bed nearer the door.
- Route 666, when they're putting on their suits, Sam's stuff is on the bed further towards the back of the set, and Dean walks into the foreground to leave.
- Nightmare, when Sam first wakes up at the start, Dean's in the bed nearer the door; also in the later motel when they're packing up, Dean is at the foot of the bed nearer the door (the other one can be seen past him).
- Something Wicked, Sam's on the bed further from the door doing research on the laptop.
- Dead Man's Blood, he's sleeping on the bed nearer the door when John wakes him and Sam to go after the vamps. (also, only two beds for the three of them, cough)
- Bloodlust, Sam's sitting on the far bed when he calls Ellen.
- Usual Suspects, this is questionable, but I love it, because when Sam is in the motel alone, his stuff is still sitting on the bed further inside (the cop has her coat tossed on the other bed, I think). ♥
- Tall Tales, Dean is eating his chili fries on what is explicitly Sam's bed, the one by the window farther away from the door.
Sam has the outside bed:
- Hell House, Sam's stuff is on the bed nearer the door when Dean hits him with the itching powder. However, as monster_of_hope pointed out to me, this is necessary to give us the better shot of Sam coming out of the bathroom bare-chested.
- Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, Sam seems to have slept on the bed nearer the door, after Dean left him alone. At least, that bed is messed up and Sam is sitting on the foot of it to, uh, watch porn from.
- Houses of the Holy, when Dean's using the Magic Fingers on the far bed. But hey, maybe that's why Sam is so disturbed. Dean's in HIS BED using the magic fingers! *g*
Ambiguous:
- Bloody Mary, Sam's sleeping on the bed near the window, and the one wider shot we get of that end of the room, there doesn't seem to be a door? But the layout looks similar to the one from Home, where the door is in a sort of inset to the left of the window. But also Dean is awake and watching over Sam from the table while Sam is sleeping. ♥
- Asylum, first & second motels both unclear, door never visible.
- Shadow, the door's all the way at the far end, pretty much equidistant from both beds, and unclear who has which one anyway.
- Provenance, beds equidistant from door.
- Salvation, no indication who's got which bed (but again only two beds for the three of them)
- Croatoan, at the beginning Sam is on the floor between the two beds
- Playthings, I can't figure out the room; I think the door may be opposite both beds?
Anyone want to add to or correct any of these? I'm, um, going to go do something vaguely productive now.
