„I have never heard about that guy in my life.“
Barbarian. „I cannot say I´m surprised, John, drug dealers aren´t usually keen on classical music, are they?“
„Very funny.“
„Could you please hurry up?“
She needn´t have said it in such an icy voice.
„Not this way,“ she slapped her husband´s hand. „Aren´t you able to tie your own tie?“
„The last time I wore a tie was at our wedding, Holly.“
„We mustn´t be late, just at the beginning…“
„Yes, there will a concert. I can´t wait.“
„He is the world´s best conductor, so you can understand I don´t want to miss it.“
„World´s best?“ he asked sceptically. „And he needs to tinkle on the piano at Chrismas parties?“
„It´s a favour from him. Because the company will found a new scholarship at Juillard in return.“
„It´s a shame they haven´t bought a new baseball team for the dough.“
„This is much cheaper. And he is a world-famous musician. Try not to insult him please.“
„As you wish. WHAT are you doing?“
The wife tightened the tie too much.
„And try to be polite, John. Don´t behave as usual. Mr.Takagi may not endure your manners.“
„I needn´t go there at all.“

She was standing at the bar on the 30th floor of the Nakatomi Plaza. The concert she had almost missed ended half an hour ago. Now she was imagining him in front of the orchestra … Yes, she could treat herself to a few days in New York.
„What are you drinking?“ she heard his voice. Black velvet sounded in it.
„Mineral water. I don´t drink alcohol…in such a mood.“
„Chrismas is coming.“
„It is. What does it matter? My husband has just moved out.“
„Has he? And that … makes you so sad?“
He had a slight foreign accent, almost unrecognizable, and looked a little for words.
„You cannot understand that… you don´t feel like a loser.“ She won´t save her marriage in spite of her success at work. She might have done that a few years ago. Not now.
„Do you think so? If it can set your mind at ease… And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer…“ he twinkled at her, „benefits of a classical education.“
She shrugged her shoulders.
„Can I get you something … Mrs….?“
„Holly Gennaro. Is she not waving at you?“ she showed to her companion a blonde. Spitefully.
The blonde must have come here with him, she is definitely not an employee here and she is always hanging around with him.
She noticed it even if it shouldn´t matter to her.
„Yes, she is waving at me. You have a sharp eye, Holly.“
„And I was thinking you hadn´t noticed her,“ she retorted waspishly.
„It´s my sister Carla,“ he smiled at her in a conciliatory fashion. „She lives in LA and wasn´t busy tonight… I think she isn´t waving at me anymore,“ he pointed out to her, „she is clever, it´s our familly´s trait, you know.“
„And you do have a surplus of confidence in common, as well, have you not?“
„You seem as if you were one of our family.“
„Really, Mr. Gru…“
He bent over her.
She didn´t mind his being so close… She needn´t mind it of course.
„Hans… Can´t we go… elsewhere? There are too many people here.“
Why not. She was getting annoyed. And everybody was watching them.
„O.K. You pay.“
A smug look on his face. Like he was about to whistle the Ode to Joy.
„Let´s go.“
„I´ll get my coat from my office. Will you accompany me, Hans?“
He looked round for the last time. „It´s peculiar. Only to think what I would do today if I hadn´t been awarded the Juilliard scholarship twenty years ago…“
