I'd never heard of her until the latest Celebrity Apprentice, currently on tv. I saw Mr. and Mrs. Peete on NBC's "Today" show just recently...did anyone else? (Info and video on TODAY site.) Their son RJ is autistic. Rodney has a book out titled Not My Boy, while Holly and RJ's twin sister Ryan teamed up for a kids' version called My Brother Read more... )

I am not crazy about the "trauma" part, but I don't mind the "devastating" part. Until a parent gets used to the idea that their kid is different, it's going to be hard on them.

I'm a little wary of Holly R. Peete. I read an essay she wrote about autism and how much it costs to get proper services for autistic kids, and it wouldn't have been too bad if it hadn't been for the fact that she mentioned in the first paragraph how wonderful it is that Anti-Vax Barbie is "raising awareness about autism and vaccines."

I've been watching "Celebrity Apprentice" (yeah, I know, trash TV) because Bret Michaels of Poison is raising money for diabetes research. Holly whatshername is on there too trying to raise money "for autism" because, as she says, "My FAMILY has autism!" (Uh, what?) I don't think AutSpe is her charity, but the charity is probably something similar

She and the other female contestants are being really catty toward Cyndi Lauper. Cyndi Lauper happens to be a bit "different." I don't want to diagnose her as an Aspie, necessarily, but she definitely shows signs of both AS and ADHD. To the cameras they'll say "Oh, we LOOOOOVE Cyndi" But behind the scenes when they think the cameras aren't on them, they'll whisper among themselves about how they can get rid of Cyndi as soon as possible, get her out of the way, send her on some useless errand so that they don't have to deal with her.

For my situation, saying my family has autism is only a slight exaggeration. Maybe it is the same for Holly Whatshername? The people in my family that have been alive while I've been alive are almost all on the spectrum...if they would get diagnosed, that is. :)

No, in her case it's only one kid.
