Book reviews / Holly R Peete

Apr 05, 2010 11:45

I'd never heard of her until the latest Celebrity Apprentice, currently on tv. I saw Mr. and Mrs. Peete on NBC's "Today" show just recently...did anyone else? (Info and video on TODAY site.) Their son RJ is autistic. Rodney has a book out titled Not My Boy, while Holly and RJ's twin sister Ryan teamed up for a kids' version called My Brother Charlie. Additionally, according to Autism Speaks's 990 form (2008), Mrs. Peete is listed as an unpaid trustee/director of AS. (Is that the title they're giving John Elder Robison?)

The brief intro (w/ "Not My Boy" chapter 2 excerpt) alone was enough to stir up anger in me: calling an autism diagnosis as a "trauma" and "devastating." I can understand frustrating, but....

What do you guys think?

Note: "Today" link includes 2 video segments -- 1 on the Peete family, & 1 titled "Can Kids 'Recover' From Autism?"

EDIT TO ADD: Did anyone else notice AutSpe's description on the 990 form? Autism Speaks (AS) funds research into the causes, prevention, treatment and cure for autism. AS raises public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society. AS aims to bring the autism community together to urge government and the private sector to take action to address this urgent global health crisis. (emphasis mine) DO. NOT. LIKE.
