Sun Mi, of Wonder Girls

May 03, 2008 20:41

Happy belated birthday to Sun Mi, a member of the JYP Entertainment girl group Wonder Girls, who turned 16 yesterday!!

Wonder Girls is a KOrean group of five girls who each achieved a spot in the group through auditions. They are the first girl group under JYP Entertainment in 10 years, and thus have received a lot of curious attention.

The beginning of Wonder Girls was in 2005, when JYP Entertainment began auditions for girls. Each girl has had 1-2 years of training since, except for the last addition, Ye Eun, who was added only three months before the group’s debut. The group is directed by Park Jin-Young himself, who is the head of the entertainment group.

The group’s debut occurred on February 10 2007, when they performed their song “Irony” on Show! Music Core. The song was from their first mini-album/single, The Wonder Begins, which was released three days later. The mini-album was a small hit, selling over 11,000 copies in 2007.

The rest of 2007 was difficult for the group. Member Ahn So Hee fell off of a motorcycle during the filming of the music video for “Some Like It Hot”, and tore a knee ligament. She was forced to sit out for a month. In July, Kim Hyun Ah left the band due to her chronic gastroenteritis, and the group was reduced to only four girls.

On September 5th, Kim Yoo Bin, a trainee from the talent agency Good Entertainment, was signed on to JYP Entertainment, and she became the replacement for Hyun Ah. On September 13th their first full album The Wonder Years was released, featuring the hit single “Tell Me”. Due to Yoo Bin’s late addition her vocals were not featuring in this album, but the music video for “Tell Me” was reworked to include her rap solo. This album was quite successful, and managed to reach the #1 spot on many of the internet and TV charts.

However, on September 14th, the very next day, all of the members, plus the manager and their stylist, got into an accident when their van crashed into a taxi from behind. All were hospitalized with minor injuries, but they were released shortly afterwards.

Despite this, the girls managed to follow a rigorous promotional schedule, including appearances and performances on various variety shows, music shows, and end-of-the-year specials. They also appeared several times in China, as well. The popularity of “Tell Me” and its catchy dance routine has drawn great attention, and many fan performances have appeared on Youtube and other video sites.

In December the girls began promoting the second single from this album, “Fool”, but since they have stopped promotional activities in preparation for college entrance exams.

The group had the privilege of flying to United States in early 2008 for a showcase concert planned by Park Jin Young, which also featured other JYP stars such as Min, G-Soul, and Lim Jung Hee.

After filming the music video for “Wishing on a Star” the girls returned to Korea in April to begin working on their second album. They were expected to release a new single in May; however, no word on it is present.

This group is still new to me, so I don’t have a definite opinion of them. Their singing seems to be decent at the very least and their songs can be catchy. Their most popular song is probably “Tell Me” which I don’t think is as awesome as everyone else apparently does. But perhaps with a little more experience this group will grow on me. After all, they’re only about a year into their career.

Tell Me
Honestly, every time I hear this song, I find it catchy. But after it’s over, I don’t think it’s that great. xD; I guess the main thing is that it doesn’t have a lasting impression. The girls’ singing is just okay in this song. They have a long way to go. The video is silly and cute, and the girls are adorable. The dance is really simplistic and easy to do. It’s no wonder it was so popular. xD;

Army Song
They released this digital single in November. It’s very short, and not much to listen to. But it’s cute. And apparently it’s a promotion to join the army. xD; That’s about all I have to say. xD;
