I ran a 5k!!!

So way back in May I decided to start The Couch-to-5K Running Plan. I'm not quite sure why, since I never been a runner before and I've never liked running at all. But I was inspired by our own silvana and also some of the moms I've met in the local moms club (that I joined right before Miles was born.) So since the end of May I've been running three times a week (just about - I took a week off in July because I aggravated March's skiing injury, the one that I thought was healed - ugh!) and my longest run has been 4 miles (reeeeaaaaalllllly slow but I got it done).

So yesterday I ran in the Butterfly 5k, which benefits a charitable organization that has installed a great playground at a park about 20 minutes from my house. I didn't have a great run (at least it didn't feel great!) but I finished in about 32 minutes, which is not really far off my pace at home. It was the first time for a lot of things for me - not only my first race, but also my first time running with people, first time running without my mp3 player, first time running this course, and only my second time running after eating (since I nearly always run first thing in the morning before the kids get up). It wasn't too hot for the end of August but I really felt the heat since it was a sunny course at 10 AM, as opposed to my usual shady runs at 6:30 AM.

My sister and brother-in-law ran with me and stuck to my pace even though they could have been further ahead. It was Becca's first race, too, and she was worried she might have to walk part of it, but she's used to running with Sean, not me! My pace was much slower and she was able to run the whole way (that was her goal). My goal was to run under 32 min, which I was pretty close to running (since I started in the back of the pack and my official time was a little over 32 min). I guess Sean's goal was to have fun and see how slow he could run - several times he ran backwards, which alternately made me laugh and want to kick him, if I'd had the energy!

Unfortunately, Eric, Quinn, and Miles didn't get to see any of the race, but Quinn did get to participate in the kids' race! He had a great time and wanted to know when he could do it again (like immediately!) And today he asked me if I could run another race today so that he could run another one, too - what have I done?!? :) I posted some photos on firelizards in the August 2008 album, so you can check out Quinn's great running form. Fortunately there are none of me!
