50

Mar 11, 2010 13:23

I've done picspams of my favorite movies and people and scenes, etc etc. I figured for a change I could go for clothes. I'm not a great fashionista myself but I can get enthusiastic about certain outfits. This is my response to picspammy 's 50 challenge. The featured outfits are on the list for different reasons. While the first part of the list is definitely about those I LOVE, you'll also find costumes that are on the list for something other than their errr... beauty (or their lack of).

50. Whatever Happened To Baby Jane (1962)
Bette Davis

No I do not like it in the sense of liking it, it's just that her entire appearance, along with the clothes, are so wonderfully creepy that it became a favorite. I saw this movie a few days ago and thought it to be brilliantly screwed up.

49. All About Eve (1950)
Bette Davis

And just to let poor Bette represent herself in a much better and non-crazy outfit, here's her beautiful dress from All About Eve.

48. Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Cary Grant

I just had to. :D

47. Hello, Dolly! (1969)
Barbra Streisand

It's a bit extravagant for sure but it's just the kind of thing I love looking at when it's fitting. Like in a musical.

46. Sound Of Music (1965)
Julie Andrews

Once again, it's not actually my taste reflected in this one but that this costume is an adorable one. It's awful and the dialogue about it in the film gets that point across quite clearly.

45. Chicago (2002)
Catherine Zeta-Jones

Showgirl outfit. It needed to be on the list. :D

44. Sound Of Music
Julie Andrews

And here we are with a much better dress from SOM. It looks really rather comfortable and lovely for its era.

43. Star! (1968)
Julie Andrews

I'm generally not fond of the style but Julie Andrews looks so regal and pretty in it that this outfit became a favorite of mine.

42. Sound Of Music
Julie Andrews

This is one hell of a plain dress and very, err, brown, but I love it! I wouldn't wear it but I do like it. Ironically to me it looks like she used some rug or God knows what to make that dress, which might not be far from the truth --- especially since you can see a glimpse of the children's clothes that she made from the drapes. :D

41. Mogambo (1953)
Ava Gardner

I love the low cut and the sensuality of something that's supposed to be ordinary and simple. It's just the right combination of clothes that makes all the difference. Okay and maybe Ava Gardner.

40. The Blind Side (2009
Sandra Bullock

I absolutely loved her clothes in this movie but this one has to be my favorite.

39. Sound Of Music
Eleanor Parker

I don't hate the Baroness and I happen to think she had fab clothes. I have a thing for outfits with a sash and this does her figure justice.

38. Sidewalks Of London (1938)
Vivien Leigh

It's absolutely marvelous and cute and so very fitting in that particular world that's being portrayed. I just think it's an adorable design.

37. Sound Of Music
Julie Andrews

Aka the wet dress, because this gets drenched later on. Out of all the clothes Maria wears as a postulant-turned-governess before she becomes a Baroness, this is my favorite. I like the color very much, although it's the very low cut on the front I have a love-hate relationship with.

36. Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961)
Audrey Hepburn

This is an iconic dress for sure, both for the movie and Audrey herself, and I love it a lot, too. The back looks absolutely fantastic.

35. Victor/Victoria (1982)
Julie Andrews

You don't have to be a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman to find this dress stunning.

34. Mary Poppins (1964)
Julie Andrews

A trademark outfit.

33. Sound Of Music
Julie Andrews

This is the favorite of many people, although it took a while for this dress to grown on me. It looks plain yet fancy, as fancy as a postulant was capable of making with her own hands. I'm pretty sure those sentiments affect me in my judgment as they affected the Captain lol.

32. Casablanca (1942)
Ingrid Bergman

I love that she looked like the long lost bride when she walked into Rick's bar.

31. Mary Poppins
Julie Andrews

I believe this is one of the most recognizable costumes ever. Who else would wear anything like that? That said, I just absolutely adore it for its combination of simple ensemble.

30. That Hamilton Woman (1941)
Vivien Leigh

My judgment of this outfit might be tainted by the way Vivien Leigh looks in this scene, especially when she's caught off guard by Nelson's appearance, but at any rate, it's a very interesting outfit.

29. Bringing Up Baby
Katharine Hepburn

That sash makes the dress look so damn fine -- even if I could do without that huge bow by the neck.

28. Gone With The Wind (1939)
Vivien Leigh

And another dress made from drapes. Okay not really but we are supposed to believe that. You couldn't convince me to put this on but in the movie it worked brilliantly. It's no wonder it's one of the most famous outfits from GWTW.

27. Miss Congeniality (2000)
Sandra Bullock

At first it's hard to notice the garment because one is filled with either lust or jealousy over those legs, but once you get over it, a pretty hot dress emerges.

26. Dial M For Murder(1954)
Grace Kelly

Well red is sort of a.... vixen color, in my opinion, and the see-through design of the sleeves complements the allusion of the color perfectly.

25. From Here To Eternity (1953)
Deborah Kerr

This frock fit Deborah Kerr perfectly, it was just as elegant yet sexy as she was. I think it is awfully pretty.

24. That Hamilton Woman
Vivien Leigh

This is striking, really, but soon it also strikes me that one definitely needs the proper figure for this dress. Bummer. But I guess there's always Vivien to look at and admire her doing the outfit justice.

23. Darling Lili (1970)
Julie Andrews

The combination of black and that bright jewelry makes for a beautiful sight. Add Julie Andrews' beauty that most aren't used to  and it makes a mesmerizing combination. And then she sings, one of the most beautiful songs ever, so I'm biased all over.

22. Dream Wife (1953)
Deborah Kerr

The movie was shot in black and white so I am glad there is a color photo of Deb in this gown for it looks gorgeous.

21. Rear Window (1954)
Grace Kelly

The black and white combination with only a hint of decoration on the skirt around the waist makes this dress immensely elegant for me.

20. That Hamilton Woman
Vivien Leigh

Although I believe this one needs a person who can pull it off, if it's worn right, it is stunning.

19. Dream Wife
Deborah Kerr

That's the kind of dress you need to put on when going on a date with Cary Grant.

18. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

I like this one a whole lot better without the bonnet. But that aside, it's just  a wonder with those stripes. I think striped designs either look tacky or gorgeous. I find this one to be the latter.

17. Dial M For Murder
Grace Kelly

This nightgown is simple yet gorgeous. Though then again, I wonder if it's actually Grace Kelly that makes it gorgeous. Oh well, it looks great nevertheless.

16. Darling Lili (1969)
Julie Andrews

I don't hate pink but I'm not a great fan of it, yet when it comes to this dress, I don't think any other color would have looked so cozy and so feminine as this one.

15. That Hamilton Woman
Vivien Leigh

I love this, tremendously. It's my favorite gown from this movie.

14. The Hucksters (1947)
Ava Gardner

Girlfriend had the figure for this kind of a gown for sure. And the gloves? So pretty!

13. Anna Karenina
Vivien Leigh

This is beyond beautiful, but it's no surprise, it was designed by Cecil Beaton.

12. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

The BBQ dress. I wouldn't want to live in that era, I think I would die if I had to wear skirts like that. But it no doubt looks gorgeous.

11. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

The green velvet dressing gown. It made Vivien look like a queen, I love it a lot and I'm not even that crazy about green. I think it's because it's the kind of shade I really like, plus it goes well with Scarlett's eyes.

10. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

The honeymoon gown. Oh boy, I love white, it looks so elegant. I also especially love black and white combination and this is just fab.

09. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

Oh this is just plain beauty, really. I love blue, it's my favorite color, and this shade looks damn fine with the dress, and her skin.

08. Sound Of Music
Julie Andrews

I've never been one of those girls who dream of a big wedding in a glorious dress and all. And yet I think this one has to be my favorite outfit from SOM. It's just so... innocently naughty. No cleavage alright but it's darn revealing.

07. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

When a friend of mine watched this movie on TV last week, she told me  "Now I know where all the romantic-sweep-her-off-her-feet-at-the-bottom-of-the-staircase-in-a-red-dress scenes originate from." No wonder. Aside from how much of the story, feelings, characterization and all, are represented in this design, it is simply exciting to look at.

06. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

I love black. It can be dark, sad, melancholic and even scary. But it can also be utterly elegant which I think is the case here.

05. To Catch A Thief (1955)
Grace Kelly

This is so simple and that's what makes it so gorgeous.

04. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

The first moment we meet Scarlett and she's in this damn impressive ruffle gown, it definitely catches one's eye. And I have a thing for white/red combination anyway.

03. Gone With The Wind
Vivien Leigh

THE dress. Yep. I can't say I care for fluffy and furry things but this is just wow.

02. Mary Poppins
Julie Andrews

I told you I like red/white combination. Wearing her then husband's design, I think this is one of the prettiest dresses Julie Andrews ever wore. No it's not revealing, and it's not a breath taking evening gown either, I just think it is absolutely fitting to the movie character. Bright, gorgeous and vibrant. When I saw a replica of this dress in Disneyland, I was just as starry eyed.

01. Anna Karenina (1948)
Vivien Leigh

This might surprise some of you, I know, because my nr1 outfit does not come from my most favorite movies, but as you may have noticed, I set up ranking by the clothes and not by the movies. Ever since I watched Anna Karenina, I've been in awe. I could hardly pay attention to the film itself so mesmerized I was with the costumes -- and this one in particular. Cecil Beaton at his best. So he beats out second place Tony Walton, sorry Tony!
