[TM] 230 - Black and White

“You’re a real snake, Jameson, you know that?”

“I must be, if you’re calling me that.” Artie snorted into the phone as he signed the report Julianne had just handed him and nodded, shooing her off. Readjusting the phone between jaw and shoulder, he leaned back in his seat and gave the call his whole attention. “I haven’t been Jameson to you or anyone since the Sixties.”

“You were a snake in New York, and you’re a snake now.”

“And you’re a man with a poker debt to settle. I take it out in cash, it’ll bankrupt you with interest figured in.”

“You forgave that debt twenty years ago, and we both know it.” Lieutenant Marvin Peeler grunted on the other end. “I’m just doing this because I’m such a nice guy. Now did you get the fax or not?”

Artie leaned over and rummaged through his paper tray, pulling up a recently dropped off file. Sure enough, it was a set of fax prints, displaying the very set of documents he’d been looking for.

“Okay, so I got it in black and white.” Artie replied blandly, leafing through the paperwork. “Tell me what I’m looking at, asshole.”

“Every miserable thing you could ever want to know about the kid...that’s why the file ain’t that big, plus I think I slipped in a Boy Scout merit badge in there by mistake. The fella’s clean, Jackson...of the squeaky variety.”

Artie hated to admit it, but the man was right. Aside from a moving violation traffic school had fixed, there wasn’t much to say about him save for the fact that he was an upstanding citizen, and a well-respected member of the community. It was all there...lined up neatly in black and white.

“I just don’t get it, Wally...why the hell are you so interested in some two-bit Magnolia boy? He’s not even a blip on the radar.”

Artie had to smile to himself as he continued leafing through the background report. It said nothing of the boy’s personal character, but Artie couldn’t run a background check on his personality. All he could do was check him legally...after all, Rian had mentioned him not once, not twice...but six times in passing.

All in one day. That meant this kid was under her skin...and that made him the most interesting thing in Artie’s world short of an afternoon alone with the missus.

“When you have kids of your own, Marv, you’ll understand...and not before.” Artie replied simply, finally dropping the background check on Noah Harrison back on the surface of his desk.
