Andrew Wyeth - Memorial

American painter Andrew Wyeth died on Friday 1/16. He was 91 and seems to have been painting until pretty much the end. He died in his sleep, at his home. Really, I think this is a happy announcement (well, as much as it can be). What I mean is that a long, successful/talent-filled life had a good and peaceful end to it. I saw his work at the ( Read more... )

ZBrush is one of the more fascinating products out there, IMHO, and people create what I think are some of the most mind-blowing pieces of artwork from it.

The following gives a better example of the 3d work in progress:

OK, now you've got me side-tracked ;)

Please note, it has a very UNINTUITIVE interface and weird overall functionality (I really wish Adobe would purchase Pixologic), and I found trying to pick up ZB2 was difficult. I haven't tried newer versions (yet) but absolutely WILL.

Think of it as a really weird but powerful "2.5D" modelling and rendering program, and even that isn't totally accurate. However, you are correct in that it does not have animation capabilities. You can use it to create stills, or to create models and/or textures to then export to a 'real' 3d program like Maya or 3DS Max for movies (high-res/polygon) and games (lower-res/polygon). I cannot overstate how much it has changed the look and quality of 3d games because of being a more 'organic' and sculptural way to edit your models.

By the way, if you go the 3d program route, I highly recommend 3DS Max for ease of use in polygonal modelling and for being more intuitive (IMO).
