American painter Andrew Wyeth died on Friday 1/16. He was 91 and seems to have been painting until pretty much the end. He died in his sleep, at his home. Really, I think this is a happy announcement (well, as much as it can be). What I mean is that a long, successful/talent-filled life had a good and peaceful end to it. I saw his work at the Greenville County Museum in SC while at was at Governor's School (summer of '96). I could have sworn that I met him while there, but I am most likely wrong and have been scouring the internet for whether he was there as visiting artist or whether my mind is making it up. Anyway, the online images are somewhat poor in quality for someone who has such a great expanse of work - really doesn't do any justice to his skill. The pictures at
http://www.museumsyndicate.com look much better than most I've found. I enjoy much of the hidden darkness and desolation. Without further ado:
Adrift, 1982
Blackberry Picker, 1943
Braids, 1977
Marriage, 1993
The Carry, 2003
Weatherside, 1965
And, of course -
Christina's World, 1948
Seems to possibly have the same home from the previous Weatherside painting. He did often use her and the property as models.
