More CS Lewis

To you LotR fans out there (i.e. both of you who read my LJ)--

In C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy (aka the Perelandra Trilogy), Lewis refers to a place called Numinor, as "the true West," though the book takes place in England in the late 1940's. Is this a British mythological thing? Where did Tolkien get it?

Lewis also makes an interesting reference to us being in Middle Earth--God and angels above us and Satan and demons below us.
