teh birthday and other stuff

I'm trying not to be so nocturnal and failing. I teach some AM classes in the spring and will have to adjust by then or spend a few weeks dying as my days force the adjustment. What I need is a big ole monitoring job. That would do the trick. hahahaha

So the four youngest made me breakfast on Sunday and served me strong hot coffee with tons of half and half in bed. Then they lazed around with me. it was wonderful. The teens made the most incredible chocolate birthday cake. Today Son # 3 took me out for a late lunch and I met his new g/f. Nice all around. He told me that if I get into the PhD program and make it though to the bitter end, he will buy me a post hole digger and paint it gold. Back in the day, when he was out in the field with us a lot excavating at O.G. we used to all pass one around in a certain part of the site and refer to it as our PhD. We thought we were hilarious. Nothing like a bunch of archaeologists and archy students who think they're funny. Anyway, just the thought of N producing that trophy warms my heart.

B had his soccer team party tonight at John's Incredible Pizza Hell. Hey, the kids always love it, just because the parents come home with a headache from the unbelievable amount of noise...B had the most amazing coach this year. The guy was so engaged with every kid, I have rarely seen that kind of dedication to teaching each kid new skills, no matter where the kid is starting out. I'm sure no soccer mom, but my kids in general have enjoyed futbol and I've been participating on the momly level for the last quarter century. Goodgods, that's a long time. A few of the eight have tried it and not liked it so much, but we've had a pretty big crowd that has enjoyed the game. Back to tonight's team party. When this coach handed out the trophies, he had something wonderful and insightful to say about each of the kids on the team. It was so cool. It was quite rare, in my experience. The kids were beaming. Very cool. My hat's off to that guy.

Poor J, this year he had the absentee coach. Ah well, you win some, you lose some. At least it didn't get him down to the point of not wanting to play. And poor, poor N. He screwed up his leg and ankle so badly riding the week before practice began that he missed out on the whole season. Nothing like being at the beach at Daughter # 1's place with a few kids and getting a pix msg at about 10 PM with a photo of the most distorted, swollen ankle ever and the caption, "mom, do you think it's broken?" Ah, my strange life. It wasn't broken, just had every ligament, muscle, tendon, whatever torn from the toes to the knee.  Everyone was surprised including the orthopedic doctor. Maybe we're getting past the break-a-year phase...not that this is better!

family, kids
