Big compliment

One of my classes for this semester was in another discipline altogether... in the school of geosciences. I took a class there (we doctoral students are required to take at least two heavy classes in other disciplines) on "Advanced Remote Sensing". Basically what we learned to do is take the raw data from satellite images and process them - which can tell you a lot (such as where prehistoric sites may exist even though trees and grass cover the ground).

I gave my final presentation Wednesday night. My research for that class was to see if I could satellite images to determine where prehistoric chert (like flint) quarries exist in this state. The outcome of the research - it couldn't be done (for technical reasons - but new technology in the near future may still make it possible).

After the class, the professor told me I'd done a very good job. Then he suggested I consider changing my discipline (to geosciences - geology, geography, and a couple of other disciplines added together).

That's a huge compliment. I think he was even hinting he'd like to be my major professor.

I've had 4-5 professors in that school ask that I consider it. I've had others (researchers/lab people with Ph.Ds) also tell me I was a good match for their department. That's encouraging to hear!
