We ended up drifting away from our UU church when we got a new minister. It wasn't that we disliked him or disagreed with his selection; he seemed fine. It just felt like we didn't fit there anymore.

We participated in a "cottage meeting" that was basically "what would you like to see in the church" and explaining the process. From what we understood, the selection was pretty much arranged by the MDD, and it was a special case for some reason (something to do with a previous minister being asked to resign, we were never really clear on it.)

1. not really, unless you can consider something vaguely similiar such as choosing narrators in a LARP in which case I think the pool of selection is smaller and more obvious. my technique had always been to choose people who were not getting enough out of the game as a player. You, for example, were always more creative and imaginative than the role of player would allow you, so I promoted you so that you could indulge those thoughts with more freedom ( ... )
