A Wizard of Mars Recap

Mar 28, 2010 02:18

So, I just finished A Wizard of Mars in one seriously nonstop sitting, and as promised, have chronicled my reactions. I tried to keep them organized, but kind of lost the thread somewhere around chapter 3, so forgive me for a lot of squeeing, capslock, and lulzing.

I also did google earth screencaps of all the places that they visited (or at least ( Read more... )

WANT.

Also, I didn't know the book was out already. I really, really should get on that.

It is, umm, not past the actual release date yet. But the Barnes & Noble near my house just got their shipment in yesterday, and I know that Amazon is shipping the books at this moment. I'd check around your local bookstores to see if they have it in stock. (Barnes & Noble is a likely bet. I checked the Borders near my house yesterday too, cause it was less expensive, but they hadn't been shipped yet.)

The lady at my B&N ordered it from their warehouse even though it's not technically released out because the release date isn't in red omg like crazy popular books would be. So I got mine on Friday and finished it Saturday morning ;) Admittedly in two sittings.

I so agree with everything you said there omg. In the beginning I was calling my sister to share funny quotes with her, but then I had to stop because she's going to read it sometime and I didn't want to spoil her.

This book was fabulous. Everything was fabulous! The boyfriend thing at the end made me squee so much. Also, I adore Mamvish (if adore is the proper word something that big) and the "You are my friend!" response to tomatoes. Adorable!!

I probably should have finished it in two sittings. But considering it was the middle of the weekend, I did not care.

My jaw literally dropped at the boyfriend part. And then I had to avoid making squeeing out loud, so I put my hands over my mouth, cause by then it was about... midnight-ish? (BUG OMG, IT IS LEGIT CANON NOW)

I am not sure if I love Mamvish or Irina more. I was expecting Mamvish a little, though, so Irina wowed me a little bit more. (THEY ARE BOTH PRETTY EQUALLY BADASS THOUGH JUST SAYIN'.)

First, finally. Finally, finally, a relationship (or, I suppose, what passes for one) between them. And overall, I'm really happy to see a book that really focuses back on Nita and Kit, even though all the other characters are there.

And secondly, that shoutout of the 'Presence' was a beautiful touch. :D PONCH PONCH PONCH.

Now we just have to wait for Roshaun's story, right?

It makes me so happy that it finally happened, in book-canon. I would have been fine without it, of course, but STILL.

PONCH. <3 I was so happy to see him again. What happened to him in W@W was probably one of the most emotional moments for me, so it was so FANTASTIC to have him show up. (I LOVE THAT GOD-DOGGY SO MUCH.)

Haha, yes, Roshaun's story. Hopefully, it'll be the next book. /crosses fingers

SO.

I actually friended you b/c I found you via DD's twitter and :OOOO omg I love your recap I feel like we sort of maybe shared brains (although, I have to say I'm being generous to myself because I was up reading til 2:30 to finish it, and I had work at 7.)

BUT. zomg. yes. BOYFRIEND. and I loved it, and it was exactly what I was hoping for, although I had one brief "I'm sorry, WAT" moment that still haunts me to this very moment (that's, uh. 10 hours after I read it, so IDK if it will haunt me forever. I'm just being dramatic.)

Dairine is eleven?

ELEVEN?

wat. I mean, I knew that DD's timeline was screwy, but... wat? Nita was thirteen, found out she was a wizard when she was still in school (?) went on summer vacation in DW, HW was... still that summer? (?) but WA was like... spring break, right? and then-

My head hurts. :( D:

BUT IT WAS STILL SUPER AMAZING. Also, I sort of want to be Irina when I grow up (says the 25 year old college student. >.<)

It's perfectly cool to have friended me! I love to have new friends!
I myself finished this at somewhere around 1AM to 2:30 so that might have contributed to the shared brainwaves.

The timelines have always confused me, to be quite honest. If that's true, then Deep Wizardry, High Wizardry and A Wizard Abroad all take place in... about the same summer. Plus it seems like various years have passed but the characters haven't aged.
I am not sure what is going on, but I blame the paradoxes. And then just shrug my shoulders and ship Dairine with Roshaun anyways.

I want to be Irina when I grow up, too. (THAT LADY, SHE IS SUPER EPIC.)

THIS. YES.

In my head she's about 14 and shipping her with someone isn't gross. :(

(DUDE, IF WHEN I HAVE KIDS I END UP WEARING THEM IN SLINGS AND GETTING A PARAKEET, I BLAME DD.)

And yeah. I... uh. something something fandom (DD apparently reads this and I would rather not weird out her face D: ) but I've tried in depth to figure out timelines and THEY DO NOT GO and I mostly shrug and say that Nita's 16 and dairine is 13/14 and go from there. :|

OMIGOD BOYFRIENDDDDDD! I think that is the only coherent thing I am capable of saying right now. Like, the way that she asked-but-didn't-ask more like told him/he told her/whatever they did is EXACTLY how I always expected things would work with them!!

(However, large annoyance at lack of Dairine, even if we forget lack of Roshaun for a moment, which is just as dire. Dairiiiiiine, I need more of your snark! Diane Duane MUST WRITE FASTER THIS TIME. That is all.)

BOYFRIENDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD~
(I- I may never be coherent again?)
But seriously! I LOVED how Nita was just like, "Well fine he's my boyfriend!", and Kit was like, "That's sexy.", and then Kit was like, "Hey, remember that..." and she was like, "Well, if it's cool with you..." and he was like, "Yeah, it's cool", and it was just SO THEM, I COULD BURST WITH HAPPINESS.

(Dairiiiiine~. What we did see was hella amusing, though. IN A WAY THAT MADE ME GO /EYEHEARTS THE ENTIRE WAY THROUGH.)

GAH I UNDERSTAND YOUUUU. And your paraphrasing of the entire scenario is spot on. And it IS SO THEM. It's like "Oops so I know back there I said that and I'd like it to be true but really I guess I could play it off as a mistake? If you need me too? Ohgoodyoufeelthesame. Tag, you're it!" Like Aurilelde's comment that Nita's idea of a physical relationship involves punching Kit in the shoulder. WHICH IT DOES! They are just so adorably shy about this and walking on tiptoe so they don't mess things up. Can they please be awkward and adorable and in love for the rest of their lives ( ... )
