There was this woman, with a little boy, maybe two or three years old, In the train car I was in this morning on the CTA. He wasn't being particularly disruptive, maybe kind of loud, but perfectly tolerable. He was grabbing at her newspaper, I think he wanted to read the paper like his mommy (d'awww), and she just STARTS FLIPPING OUT AT HIM. At first it didn't bother me, it just normal mom-like reprimanding, and she said something about how he shouldn't wave the paper around because he might hit someone.
Naturally, the toddler didn't get it and got restless. CUE THE MOM FLIPPING OUT AT HIM EVEN MORE.
SHE STARTED HITTING THE KID. ON A TRAIN FULL OF PEOPLE. IN BROAD DAYLIGHT.
Naturally, I STARED AT HER IN COMPLETE HORROR.
She snaps at me (I can't remember wtf she said), and I tell her if she keeps hitting her kid, I'm going to call the driver and tell him. BECAUSE CHILD ABUSE? ON MY CTA? I THINK NOT.
I was late to class, but it worth it to confront that stupid bitch. FUCK.
I've never been the victim of physical abuse, so it's not like this would have stirred up any personal trauma for me, but this got under my skin in a way that made me feel like I couldn't not do something. I was shaking when I exited the train. I really don't want to think about what that kid endures in private, when no one's looking. Seriously, if mom can't control herself on a crowded train, what the fuck does she do when no one is watching? I just hope that she doesn't take out her rage at being confronted on the poor kid.
