They did do the ripping of the veil in the Wilson/Stephens version! How could I forget?!
Oh god, I love that version so much. Despite the liberties they take --- St John did not find her on the moors, thank you very much! And where's my Miss Temple! --- my god so much of it just makes me so happy because it's right there on the screen. So much of what I've seen my head is made real in front of me and god, even hearing names that I've grown up with spoken aloud and by someone else makes me so happy.
You can totally tell this version was made by people who know the book intimately. Well, I like to think so. Cos otherwise you wouldn't get that sense of authenticity, the fact that so many scenes other versions cut or compress are laid out on the screen and moved through with such precision, the fact that the imagery from the book saturates the screen so thoroughly.
*sighs* God, I'm so weepy today. I watched Pygmalion earlier --- for the second time, yes, just to test my opinion --- and that made me all emotional. And now I just cried for Bertha Antoinetta. I don't know if I ever have before but god, it's like the older I get and the more I realise about the world and myself, the more I identify with Bertha Antoinetta.
Well, maybe 'identify' is the wrong word. Maybe it's more like 'empathise'. 'Sympathise', that sort of thing. Cos there's madness and then there's madness, isn't there? But god, poor Bertha Antoinetta. To be mad in that era without the benefit of penicillin and sympathetic doctors and counselling and therapy.
See, now I'm getting weepy again. And I've realised I'm going to have to buy that godawful Gainsbourgh/Hurt version just so I can have Amanda Root --- Ilovehersomuch, perfect casting! --- as Miss Temple. Anyway, I really should own them all. Even *shudder* the Hinds/Morton version. GadIloatheher, horrible woman. But he'd be marvellous as Rochester, I just know it.
