Need help with statement of purpose!
So I'm applying to grad schools for Sociology this Fall, but my statement still needs ALOT of help! please post some constructive criticism? limit is 300-500 words.
I strongly desire to obtain an M.A. and Ph. D. in Sociology from XXX University. XXX’s specialization in health, aging and the life course is of great interest to me. The research facilities, knowledgeable faculty and funding opportunities will greatly assist me in my ultimate pursuit of completing my doctoral studies at XXX University
My research interests include the fields of sociology of medicine, health and illness, social epidemiology, HIV/AIDS, women’s health, global inequality and the effect on the health of the poor and public health. My most recent independent research study focused on the latter. I would like to work with and study under Dr. XXX and Dr. XXX. Dr. XX’s specialization in Sociology of the family, sociology of health and illness, and gender are parallel with mine. Similarly, Dr. X’s specialization and knowledge of medical sociology make him an appealing mentor to study under also.
My professional goals include completing my Ph. D. in Sociology by 2017. I plan to use my doctoral degree to obtain a professorship teaching Sociology at a distinguished university after graduating from your program. In conjunction with teaching at a major university, I would also like to teach bioethics and medical sociology at a medical school, and serve on an ethics committee of a nearby hospital as well. In the future, I plan on continuing my education and completing a Master’s of Public Health degree. With a formal education in Public Health, my goal is to work for the WHO or UNICEF to improve people’s access to primary healthcare and other important global health issues. In addition to pursuing professional and academic interests, I want to lend my time, knowledge and services locally as well as globally.
As an extension of my medical missions’ experience in Papua New Guinea, I plan on continuing to support and participate in volunteer trips that focus on health education programs and promote community-based health care.
I believe that completing a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Sociology has prepared me for a career in teaching and researching in the medical and sociological fields. Working as a laboratory assistant for my university’s Biology department has given me not only the opportunity to work closely with a professor, but also a small preview of higher education teaching as well as a desire to teach and invest in the lives of undergraduate students.
I am confident that my academic strengths combined with my personal passions and experiences will be excellent assets to Purdue University. Completing my doctoral degree in Sociology from XXX will equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve my professional goals and make a positive change in the lives’ of my students and of others.
