Missing deadlines

Jan 17, 2010 10:40

What if you miss the deadline by a few days?
There are a few schools which were due Friday that I decided not to apply.
Then realized I might as well have given it a shot. Anyway, these are MA programs and not especially competitive... Do you think they will still review my stuff if I send it Monday? Does anyone have experience with this kind of

deadlines

Maybe. It's a crapshoot.

I'm confused why people post these kinds of questions here...the only people that have the answer are those people that actually work in the graduate admissions office.
Call and ask what'll happen. They might just cash your check and throw away your application, so don't just do it for shiggles. If you're going to take the time and money to do applications that were already due, then call and ask the people that can give you a real answer.

If I call and ask and they just want my $$ won't they reply in kind and just take my $

Nah, I think that if you call and you're polite and assertively ask for the Truth, the worker will probably tell you the truth. The people that work there probably aren't inherently evil and a lot of times are students.

Don't forget that Monday is a mail holiday.

It depends on the department and it's not about the money at all. I doubt the student affairs officer in my department, for example, would bother with a completely new application. She has to screen the initial batch (a record number of applicants this year, according to her) at the same time our new semester begins, so it's a pretty chaotic position. If she has a reason not to consider your application, she'll gladly take it.

You don't sound very excited about this school anyway, so why trouble them or yourself?

Hmm I had posted a question the other day about a school e-mailing me and asking for the rest of my application, after getting my LoRs, (which I thought was certainly a sign of interest in my application). And ppl had said very strongly, "They just want your app fee". A few friends suggested this as well...Which is why I think its about $$$ I mean if school charges 70$ (X300 applicants) thats 21,000$..

It could be possible their bosses tell them If ppl ask if we are still accepting apps always say yes then just take the check and toss the application"... Or they might have policies where they aggressively contact applications which have been started to secure the app fee (thus explaining my false hope inspiring e-mail from the program director)... As Mary kate Olsen said to David letterman "The economy's bad"

Don't worry, I saw the post you deleted. People had also tried to tell you that the school e-mailed you as part of their standard procedure, but you blew them off. Look, departmental budgets can't be supplemented by bake sales, which would be about as useful as any campaign to collect 'additional' application fees. Think about it. You sound like you're fabricating reasons to apply to a school you're not interested in, and if you're so skeptical about their motives, just save yourself the anguish and move on.

I really don't think if they got a crappy transcript and low GRE scores they contact those students as "standard procedure" asking for the rest of the app unless they are just collecting application fees. I really, really don't.

My letter writers are big names in their fields so either they were intrigued by the letters or wanted my precious $70....

1. Didn't you just ask this (or an extremely similar) question in a deleted post a few days ago? Were some of the answers from that post applicable to this one ( ... )

Thanks for the replies.... the question I posted yeterday was about the school contacting me with respect to another application I didn't finish...

The question I am asking now is other schools I flaked on and if I can still apply....

this is a little bit lack of interest because I really don't want to move out of the tri-state area and some of these schools look like Texas beauty pageants (sorry if you are from Texas or a Beauty pageant)... But, I also didn't feel like my writing sample or SoP were up-to-snuff on Friday... I didn't just apply to schools because I thought rejection was unlikely - I only mentioned that because I did not want to give the impression I was trying to submit a late application to somewhere really selective which would be even more of a dumb thing to do.
