Missing deadlines

Jan 17, 2010 10:40

What if you miss the deadline by a few days?
There are a few schools which were due Friday that I decided not to apply.
Then realized I might as well have given it a shot. Anyway, these are MA programs and not especially competitive... Do you think they will still review my stuff if I send it Monday? Does anyone have experience with this kind of

deadlines

Don't forget that Monday is a mail holiday.

It depends on the department and it's not about the money at all. I doubt the student affairs officer in my department, for example, would bother with a completely new application. She has to screen the initial batch (a record number of applicants this year, according to her) at the same time our new semester begins, so it's a pretty chaotic position. If she has a reason not to consider your application, she'll gladly take it.

You don't sound very excited about this school anyway, so why trouble them or yourself?

Hmm I had posted a question the other day about a school e-mailing me and asking for the rest of my application, after getting my LoRs, (which I thought was certainly a sign of interest in my application). And ppl had said very strongly, "They just want your app fee". A few friends suggested this as well...Which is why I think its about $$$ I mean if school charges 70$ (X300 applicants) thats 21,000$..

It could be possible their bosses tell them If ppl ask if we are still accepting apps always say yes then just take the check and toss the application"... Or they might have policies where they aggressively contact applications which have been started to secure the app fee (thus explaining my false hope inspiring e-mail from the program director)... As Mary kate Olsen said to David letterman "The economy's bad"

Don't worry, I saw the post you deleted. People had also tried to tell you that the school e-mailed you as part of their standard procedure, but you blew them off. Look, departmental budgets can't be supplemented by bake sales, which would be about as useful as any campaign to collect 'additional' application fees. Think about it. You sound like you're fabricating reasons to apply to a school you're not interested in, and if you're so skeptical about their motives, just save yourself the anguish and move on.

I really don't think if they got a crappy transcript and low GRE scores they contact those students as "standard procedure" asking for the rest of the app unless they are just collecting application fees. I really, really don't.

My letter writers are big names in their fields so either they were intrigued by the letters or wanted my precious $70....

Yes, they do, because they're just putting these things in a file. They haven't looked at the scores or transcripts. They want to make sure the applicant is aware they have submitted only part of the application.

The $70, I believe, goes primarily to the graduate school, not your department. So why would your department ask you for more to get a fee that they might not see?

Nobody is looking through incomplete supplementary materials.

Good point about the dept not getting the money, that is very reassuring. However The taurus-like "they just want to get your money" hypothesis was not posited by me, but other individuals here, it just made sense when I heard it...

Also, even when I look at my app online it says "LOR submitted by Professor Important as hell" so if I can see the big name - they certainly can - without looking at the actual contents of the letter. Considering the shallow nature of immediate cut offs these initial things are more often than not self evident. Thanks.

You are assuming that the person putting the folder together knows that your LOR is VIP. Unless the professor is mainstream public they might not know who it is. If I said my LOR is Professor Valerie Warrior would you know who that is? My letter writer is not her just using her as an example.

You should know what happens when you assume something by now.

They probably haven't even looked at your letters. They see that you have turned in part of the application but not all of it, and they check in with you asking for the rest of your application. Why? It's a courtesy. They're letting you know that the application is not complete, and encouraging you to finish it.

Ok, how about this: How would they know what parts of my application were missing if they hadn't looked at my supplementary materials?

Kind of like your mom confronting you about something you wrote in your diary while claiming not to have read it...

Are you for real? Because they can look at a letter and say, "Hey, this is a recommendation letter!" because it is entirely obvious what a recommendation letter is, what a writing sample is, what a SOP is, etc.

Yes I am for real. If they took note of what was missing they did an inventory of my supplementary materials.

Further, the e-mail was from the program director not someone putting together files or folders. Unless they practice DELIBERATE SUBTERFUGE writing "we are reviewing apps" when in reality they are just compiling folders. Or signing e-mails from an administrative assistant on behalf of the DGS.

An inventory (seeing what is there) is not the same as reviewing (reading fully and evaluating) your file. They don't review incomplete files. They did not see your rec letters were from "big stars in your field" and then start drooling over you. Neither are they greedy assholes just looking for your $$$. You're probably one of a handful of incomplete files, and they're saying, "Hey, we're starting to review applications. You want to finish yours, so we can review it to? Hugs and kisses, DGS."

RELAX. You are reading way too much into this shit.

I know, they said they were reviewing apps. Not putting together folders. Two totally different things.
