I am applying to a couple of highly selective Ph.D. programs in history (European/ medieval). This is my second time around; last year, one of these schools rejected my application, but a prof whom I contacted told me that I had great LORs and that the rest of the application file was fine, too, but what really hurt my application were the low GRE analytical writing scores (I got 3.5 on this section while the verbal and quant scores were pretty good).
Last week, I retook the GRE and got 740v/690q, which I am quite happy with. Still, I am anxious that the essays scores are going to be mediocre at best.
Does anyone have an idea what lower-end requirements top-10 programs in history might have for the Analytical Writing scores? Would, say, 4 or 4.5 kill my application right away? Unluckily, it will take a whole lot of time before I know what I actually got because I live overseas (Russia) and snail mail does not work very well here.
