Ever since her father returned home, things had been looking up for Meg Murry. She was doing better in school, she hadn't been getting into as much trouble, her attitude had calmed down and things were looking up! Life, as Charles Wallace had said, was good.

As good as life is now, though, Meg finds herself unable to sleep. She can't figure out why, either; she's not thinking too much, she hasn't been having bad dreams, she's not feeling ill and she's not scared of anything or anything like that, she's just... wide awake.

So there she is, sitting in her bed, staring at the trees outside that are moving ever so gently along with the breeze.

Eventually, she's asleep, and she's dreaming that she's back with Charles and they're on Uriel and Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Which and Mrs. Who, they're all there, and so is Calvin with his red hair and blue eyes and it's as beautiful as she remembers it. It's perfect, and undoubtedly the best dream she's had in a while, but all good things must come to an end.

"We must go now," Mrs. Whatsit announces.

Then there's that familiar feeling of tingling out of existence and the thrust back into reality, except this time it hurts and while everything's still black Meg can feel the wind being squeezed from her lungs, just the way it was on the two-dimensional planet, and then everything just stops. Time, feeling, Meg's heart - everything.

It just stops.

When it starts again, it's still black, but Meg can breathe and she can feel her heart pounding and after a few moments she realizes the darkness is due to the fact that her eyes are closed. She opens them slowly and is greeted by a world she's never seen before and a chill forces itself through her small frame.

She sits up with a gasp.

"Charles?" she calls, voice cracking. "Calvin? Mrs. Whatsit? Mrs. Who? Mrs. Which? ... anyone?"

Nothing.

"Oh, no."
