The experiments were not going well for several reasons, one of which being that Bova had an inadequate test subject in the first place. Danny wasn't 100% human, so how could he know that the mutation in his DNA didn't also alter the state of his blood?
He couldn't.
But there was nothing for it now, already so involved in the experiments he'd already done. So Bova is walking from the library where he'd managed to get Harth to read a bit more to him, back to the room where Danny is kept. It's isolated, much further down from the more populated rooms, and very nearly airtight. The smell would have given away their location, and while Danny wasn't ever supposed to leave, it was still a concern.
Not one Bova is thinking about now, though, frowning at his notes as he heads over.
