In which my son is no longer guaranteed the right to pee, and I talk about dentists, doctors & books

So, thanks to the Trump administration and our new Attorney General (who supposedly pressured DeVos into agreeing, Two no longer is guaranteed a safe place to pee at school. Thankfully, I'm fairly sure his school will guarantee him a safe place to pee anyway, as they have given us absolutely zero difficulty over Two. I also strongly suspect that ( Read more... )

I definitely hope there will be no practical implications whatsoever for Two from this stuff (is he very upset? or is he not following the news?)

Had a nice visit with S&S, staying the night at their house.

That's great! I feel like you've been seeing more of them now that you live in NJ than when you were in the same area :)

Hope MiniPlu's issues are nothing major!

I still haven't read the second Magnus Chase book, but heard about the genderfluid character and thought that was a pretty cool add to an already impressively diverse YA series.

(BTW, I was talking to a friend about trans characters and how there seem to be a lot more trans female characters than trans male characters in lit these days (where "a lot" = still a very, very small number), and she mentioned a book she'd recently read that had a secondary character who was a trans boy -- Seanan McGuire's Every Heart a Doorway. I haven't read it myself, though I plan to at some point; I think it's meant as a book for grown-ups rather than YA, although my understanding is the characters are teens, but I thought I'd mention it to you. I've read other books by this author, and she's not my favorite author ever, but I do keep reading, and I've heard particularly good things about this novella.)

Hope you're enjoying The Hanging Tree! And isn't that Discworld crossover awesome? Such a collection of brilliant ideas!

I'll look into the book - thank you. It drives Two bananas that almost all the trans-related news focuses on mtf people. He doesn't get to see many people like himself in the news, and I think he feels that, even there, he's more of a second-class citizen by being the "less popular" direction, or something. The book I read last year, "The Art of Being Normal" mostly focuses on a mtf character, although a ftm character does enter the picture later on, and has his own issues.

It's sad that I *am* seeing S&S more often now that I've moved than when I lived 5 miles away, but I'm really loving this chance to reconnect with them, even a little.

You guys doing ok with all the rain?
