sent up our flag and moved on

I had forgotten how much I love painting. Laying protective tape just so satisfies my inner obsessive-compulsive, and the repetitive motion of brushstrokes is lulling. I also really love the color I used, this pale green that changes with the light but never looks garish.

I finished reading Santa Olivia today, by Jacqueline Carey. It was SO AWESOME, part sci-fi/fantasy, part sweethearted lesbian romance. The main character, Loup, is the daughter of a genetically modified man who was himself part of a government experiment in creating super soldiers, so she is faster and stronger than ordinary humans, and she can't experience fear. She lives in Santa Olivia, Outpost No. 12, the forgotten militarized zone between the US and Mexico; it was supposedly cordoned off partly in response to raids by Santa Anna El Segundo, a Mexican general, and partly out of fear of the plague spreading. But now its inhabitants are forced to stay there, with no knowledge of or contact with the outside world. Loup is a fantastic heroine, supported by a varied, endearing ensemble of characters - her story is at least as much about family as it is about fighting injustice and finding hope. It's the kind of SFF I can get behind (hardcore scifi is usually not my thing), especially since it doesn't cleave to the genre tradition of white or male protagonists.

Also, Carey writes beautifully, with concision I really admire. I think she's most famous for her Kushiel series, which I might have to check out, considering how much I loved this.

I think everyone should watch Fringe and love Olivia Dunham as much as I do. As luck has it, Fringe fandom has made some exceptionally and convincingly awesome pimping efforts lately. Check it out:

- Boom Boom Pow, a fun, gorgeously-cut vid to the Black Eyed Peas song by hollywoodgrrrl. Meet Olivia Dunham: complete badass, you guys.
- a really pretty picspam of the pilot episode, by pirateygoodness
- a non-spoilery pimp post by swatkat24, which is great (even if people who don't ship Olivia/Peter are so very wrong on the internet)

For the already-initiated and/or not spoiler-phobic:

- zombie_boogie's epic post of flail
- incredibly adorable interview with Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, and John Noble at Comic-Con. I love how Anna's so enthusiastic, and how they all seem so in-sync, agreeing over each other constantly.
- eeeee, the season three promo!

And finally, now that I'm in a Fringe kind of mood, have some pictures of the incredibly lovely Anna Torv and the equally lovely Jasika Nicole.
