I'm stupendously lucky, really - S'norbans is technically a city (it has a cathedral, which also happens to technically be an abbey and a church at the same time according to the rulebook, and is therefore a city by the same rather wonderful logic that defines a river as a stream wider than a man can jump accross) but is by all rights really actually a town, but despite the fact that it's tiddly enough for me to be able to walk to most places I want to go to it still has three theatres plus school drama studios. None of them are very big, but they do often have some quite cool stuff on - I just need to shift myself and go see them more...
(There are also loads of theatres within a half-hour's car journey, and even more within a half-hour's train journey, because that takes you into London; and that's why there are also more pubs per square inch in St Albans than anywhere else in Europe. Coaching inns, from back in the day...)
(Then there's also the school stuff - my friends at the girls' school put on an absolutely fantastic version of A Midsummer's Night Dream, which seems to be the most-watched Shakespeare play ever and I want to do a production of it with the fairies dressed in rags and tags and fingerless-gloves and bin-bag cloaks and things, because it would be awesome, my school quite often has some rather fun productions on in the drama studio, the school play next year is going to be Macbeth which makes me squeal and I'm vaguely working on a script which, fingers crossed will be put on by myself and some friends in the school drama studio, although school doesn't actually know this...)
The lady I spoke to did have a semi-incomprehensible accent, actually -- but she was aware of it and we had a very funny conversation about how often she must get stupid customers asking her to repeat things. :D I was actually really surprised and impressed with the way they dealt with me - usually they are nowhere near that good...
